I was watching the Alfred Hitchcock movie, North by Northwest with Cary Grant the other night, and was thinking about how cool everything was in the 1950s. Definitely a high point for style and design, amongst other things. Nice Caddies, clothes, music, etc.

Then I saw another good movie, Far From Heaven, with Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid, which was set in 1957. And it reminded me that the Fifties were not all peaches and cream, and that there was a dark side. Intolerance, the mass conformity, expectations being forced on women limiting their lives, the fears of the Cold War and so on.

Anyway, it made me consider how people think back about decades and either remember only the good, or only the bad.

So here's an interesting sociology question: What was the best decade of the 20th century? And what do you think were the good things and bad things about that decade?

My vote would go for the 1970s. In Canada the economy was going fine, everyone seemed to have a job, there was cheap gas here (mostly, we weren't hit so much by the Oil Crisis), cool music, Pong & Atari, bell bottoms for guys, hip-huggers for chicks, muscle cars were plentiful and relatively cheap, awesome movies like Jaws, Star Wars, Dirty Harry, relaxed social attitudes, and no home computers to cause obesity, carpal tunnel, and neurosis.

On the dark side, muscle cars died out with the emissions, crime hit an all-time high (1973 was the worst), pollution was rampant, and inflation started going up at the end of the decade (peaking in 1982) raising the cost of living.

Interesting poll, I think many of the decades were great, but I didn't give to live in 2/3 of them. My top 3:

1) 1940's, the GREATEST generation of men and women. My parents were just shy of this decade, but my grandparents have many stories of WWII (Grandfather was a WWII Veteran).

2) 1960's, the decade of cars and Vietnam. Very interesting decade to study in History (I thoroughly enjoyed this one).

3) 1950's, the decade my parents were born. I don't know why exactly, but this is one of my favorites.

The 90s - The Cold War Ended, The decade was generally prosperous, there were no major wars (except for Bosnia, which was more of a "conflict", and the Gulf War, which doesn't count:devil:, since it only lasted for a month...)

The economy was good, the country was just good. Of course, there were moments that were bad (like Oklahoma City bombings and Waco) but overall, everything was fine. Music was (IMHO) great in the 90s. Whether you liked alternative, grunge, gangsta rap - whatever...

The 90s also brought us the Northstar, and the STS, which was the beginning of Cadillac's transformation into a modern luxury car company:cool:

i grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, but the 50s-60s always seemed like such a wholesome time. Things just seemed so simple back then compared to now. Kids were allowed to be kids, kids went outside to play baseball instead of in fron t of the xbox, things werent too advanced, things werent so raunchy and sexual like today, tv didnt saturate life, there was no internet. Just seems as we get more advanced, and get more technology, thigns are just getting more complicated in life. Kids at younger and younger ages are expected to do so much more these days. Whenever I watch WOnder Years or Sandlot, I always wonder how it would have been to grow up back then, just seems so nice in its simplicity compared to now.

what about 2010-1019? the teens?

I always wondered what we will call the time period we are in right now?

I voted the 50's.... everything was well, cars were amazing, lotsa new things etc...

but really if I could go back, it would be the 90's... many reasons.

Why the 1980s or 1990s? Anything specific?
Mostly pop cultrure. Music, movies, TV, clothes, styles, everything the 80's touched I loved. When I was a year old I used to rock out to The Bangals and still have that very same CD in my Fleetwood now. The exact same one I jammed to when I was 1. Jamming being a baby and grabbing the wrought iron rails in our house and bouncing up and down in my little black PJ's (Yes black even then too.) Ironically enough I was watching old videos of me as a baby and our old neighbor across the street had a, you guessed it a red 80's Fleetwood Brougham almost identical to mine. Weird part was in the video I pointed to it, turned around to look at my mom, and said "Red car!" in my little baby voice. Fate sure is a funny thing huh?

Also if I could repeat any year it'd be 1996 or 1997 specifically because all the bands I listen to were really big back then. Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, etc.

One thing to remember I guess is that they did have things like Playboy in the 1950's and I think that's when it got started?

I think kids even learned Latin in the 1950's in school didn't they? So maybe kids are expected to know less nowadays, but for sure they have to know computers to cope it would seem.....

Dude, you've been away from the forum too long!

I'd have to say the 20s or the 70s. The 20s had prohibition, which sucked, but not a whole lot of people gave a damn. Money was everywhere and everyone had at least a bit. If the 20s were a party the 30s were the hangover so I'd vote the 30s the worst decade.

The 70s were cool.

The 80s... well I usually say I was the only good thing to come out of the 80s. Most music sucked, the styles sucked, Reagan sucked although he made people believe he didn't, but most of all the cars REALLY SUCKED.

Like VH1 says...

"I love the 80's"!

I was born in that decade so I didnt get to take in all it had to offer because I grew up in the 90's but its still an amazing decade to look back on. Many people call the 80's the "dead" decade but I think it was quite the opposite. It gave us the reagan era, Cable News and Music Television, MIAMI VICE *THE QUINTESSENTIAL 80'S SHOW!*, substantial advances in technology, coming of age for alot of people and the beginning of more acceptable freedoms in many areas. The eighties was the decade when everyone just threw up their hands and said "Screw it, lets just have fun". The eighties did bring alot of heartbreak what with AIDS and some of the disasters of that decade, but they shouldnt outweigh all the good... Even some of Queen's best stuff was in the 80's. Kind of a double edged sword with that one.

I also voted the 60s. You said it so well, so I will just say I agree!
