some 1 said to my nearest gm dealer and show them my title and they can pull up my resistance number to my key,is this true? i need to know the sesistance because i need to bypass my vatts system

Well you can either take the title and the registration to your local dealer and they will give you the key code and what the resistor number is. Or you can take a volt meter put it on 20K ohms and use the positive and negitive touched to each side of the key pellet and that will tell you what the resistor number is.

dont touch the metal of the key or the leads with your finger or it will give you a false reading...once you figure which of the 15 possible resistors it is. goto an audio shop, they have the exact one you need instead of trying to make one out of several from radio shack...

its really easy to bypass the vats system

heres the ohms reading to look for

see i had lost the key and to think i could just replace the column from a 94 with its key would work but i guess not,i have to get the original key resistance then bypass it and hope it will start, i had did this column swap because i had a 94 pats car. but i do still have the original column so wheres the key pellet??

there is a box hidden under the dash that reads the chip, the column has nothing to do with it...

measure the chip in the key, get the resistor for that key...under the dash, drivers side there is a orange casing with 2 wires in it and a plastic connector that you can disconnect leading up the column...the wires will be purple or gray.

take the 2 wires that are going under the dash away from the column, connect the resistor to those to wires and VATS is bypassed for good. you dont need a chipped key anymore

You only need to know what the pellets resistance is for the Factory Key. The column from the junk yard, the key is the only thing that will work with the key cylinder. If you did not want to do the bypass, you can take the key to the new column along with the title to the car to the dealer and they can cut a new key to fit the new column along with original pellet

Holy moly this one got confusing.

What you need is the resistance value from the ORIGINAL 1996 KEY. You would then order a key from eBay for like $3 with that resistance. Then you take your 1994 key to Home Depot (or whatever) and have the eBay key cut the same way.

But if you don't have the ORIGINAL 1996 KEY, then you don't have the original 1996 resistance value. It's a value the PCM is looking for - it has nothing to do with the column. So, you'll have to bypass the VATS system as people described earlier. Put a resistor in the circuit so the PCM sees the correct 1996 value. Since you don't know what that resistance value is, you'll have to buy all 15 resistors. You can get them online from Radio Shack. My experience with them locally is that they stock less and less of this stuff. The chances that they'll have all 15 in stock would be slim. Or, you could buy them at random until one works.

Once you find the proper resistance, you can either keep the system bypassed or get the correct key and have it cut so that the system functions normally.
