I just returned from Jiffy Lube where the technicians put 7.5 quarts in my car. It has a stated fluid capacity of 5.5 quarts. These were poured from the plastic bottles (20-50W), so they were able to count the empty containers. As far as I know, I've never put this much oil in the car, but since I don't do it myself, I can't swear to it. It was very clear at Jiffy Lube since they charged me an extra $5.

Anyone know if this is even possible? I checked it again after driving about 8 miles and the oil level was reading just under full. It is the original engine with 160K miles on it.

Hmm... I smell a rat somewhere. Where did you find the capacity? The owners manual? If so, and they CHARGED you for 7.5 quarts, they only put in the 5.5
jiffy lube in my area has been known to screw people i would never trust them, and im not bashing on anyone else that works at any of these companies but some people shouldn't be working in these places for these kinds of reasons.

Get your oil changed at a dealership, or do it yourself, don't trust valvoline or jiffy lube, they're out to screw you. 7.5 quarts would be coming out your valve covers and would have blown your rear main seal. Go back to them with the manual stating that it takes only 5.5. The idiots there probably put two quarts in their realized that they didn't put the plug in, or they decided that you wouldn't know better, and that it was an oil hogging cadillac. My longblock 350 doesn't even take that much. Best of luck to you.

Final update. I don't have an oil cooler, so I'm factory compliant. After looking over older receipts and confirming that this was out of the ordinary, I went back and spoke to the manager. He looked at the car and said that's 5.5 quarts and offered to refund the overcharge or give me double the value in the form of a coupon. Thanks for the feedback from everyone.

7.5qts?

maybe they thought it had the NorthStar? that has 7.5.....

....my 4.9 only takes 5.5-6 quarts when doing an oil change (1993)

there is no way it would take 7.5...... and if they charged you extra, I would et pissed and go back... they may have used empty contanors....

...but 20W-50? what the hell did they put in that? the most an 4.x engine should use is 10W-30..... if there is 20W-50 in the engine, you're gonna blow it up as the oil is too thick to get into some small passages....really, if that is anythin besides 5W-30/10W-30, get it changed....

Due to the high mileage, I was advised to move up to a higher viscosity oil. Did I receive bad advice? I've been running this oil for 30-40K miles at least (> 4 years). Now, you must understand that I live in Austin, TX where we watch winter on the TV. I've got 160K miles on the engine and it runs great. I change the oil every 3-5K miles.

Well, if you have been running it that long, and no problems, then I am surprised....

...still, I would never run anything above 10W-30 in it... it says in the manual to never use 10W-40 at all, let alone 20W-50.... I personally would go down to 10W-30....
