Just bought an 2006 STS. Pristine. Made the mistake of replacing the battery. Clock won't set. Wish I had read this first.

And the DI 3.6 is just as susceptible to timing chain failure as the earlier models. GM extended coverage on them as well (07-09 I believe) so his 06 is left out...

 

The crappy pre-DI V6 is woefully underpowered and sucks oil besides timing chain failures

I'd be nice to keep this thread on topic since a lot of people will be coming here for updates on a fix if we get one.

I just read all 13 pages of this thread after my clock just stopped working the other day. I DID NOT remove battery power. It was working fine on Thursday and showing dashes on Friday. So, there may be some truth to the internal battery story.

 

Dudes! Make sure you call GM to report the problem. Just because they are woke, does not mean they are in a hurry for a fix. The more issues reported, the better chance of getting a fix.

Can you post photos of a full teardown of the Nav unit proving there is no internal battery?

I wish people would think more about the internal battery thing. So it would have to be that a whole bunch of Nav units (many, many, many, not just our cars) made by Denso, made over a period of several years (this has happened to STSs made in 2005 through 2011), all had their internal batteries go bad in December of 2018.

What do you calculate the probability of that happening to be? I don't have a number, but it's essentially nearly impossible. If you think it's possible then I would buy more lottery tickets.

Just because there is a one off that didn't have the car battery disconnected doesn't make this idea true. Heck maybe it's going to start happening to all of us without disconnecting the battery.

This is still highly likely a firmware bug triggered by the week count coming from GPS (or less likely a hardware limitation). This is the most logical way that so many would break at the same time.

 

There is a pretty high volume of vehicles impacted by this issue as listed in the GM bulletin. For those of you who did not click through to the Corvette forum, this is the list:

That is hundreds of thousands of vehicles (well, not all have nav but it is still a LOT). And our STSs already made the list. So unless we think GM is going to release fixes for just the trucks or something, I'm not expecting to be completely ignored here. Not sure what they will do or can do (yet) but we are grouped with a ton of vehicles/customers, was my point. I do not have the patience to call at this time, just so someone can tell me they haven't heard of the issue or whatever.

They also had this to say:

not a temporary fix at this time. Please apologize to the customer and advise that engineering is

Theres the problem, just because they know its effected doesn't in any way mean GM will fix it. Owners H A V E to call and complain to press GM for a fix and owners who ARE calling are being added to the list that when a fix is found its being provided free of cost.

Probably true, but that's only because they are too big and dysfunctional to realize it would go a long way for possible future sales if they just took care of it.

And just in case anyone at GM happens to read any of this, it isn't just the clock; the Nav also has a hard time receiving enough satellites for navigation.

 

I'm waiting for the announcement that the fix is removal of the NAV and sending it in through the dealer to perform a $1500 upgrade.

FWIW, I'm still getting notices from time to time from Ford to take my '95 Ford Ranger to the dealer for a recall involving the cruise control.

 

Well, the cold weather and a lack of driving the Platinum caused a dead battery and SURPRISE. Dashes where the time should be. I know it is a minor inconvenience, but I hate it. Hope I do not lose battery on anything else. Only good news, I got in new shocks and springs for the Platinum so the front end will no longer be low. I want back to factory all around so the Magnetic shocks work.

Hope GM finds a time solution soon or it autofixes in a few months.

Also mine is slower to acquire the GPS lockup with the satellites since the time went out. Wonder what the connection is?

 

I wrote earlier that I suspect that it's because it is spending time on the first satellite trying to get the time, doesn't get it, so moves to the next one, and so on; slowing everything down.

The firmware contains predicted positions vs time of GPS satellites. If the clock stops the predictions are no longer valid so the satellite acquisition process becomes more luck than management.

 

Good point Koz. The nav has an internal almanac that keeps track of which satellites to look for at certain times. Hard to do that with no knowledge of what time it is.

Yesterday I drove a few times for over 40 minutes each time and never got a GPS lock. I did finally get a lock on the way to work this morning after about 30 minutes. It definitely seems to be more luck than management. The dead reckoning was WAY off without the GPS lock.
