Unable to adjust clock--2008 STS wi Navigation

The clock adjust screen will come up after touching and holding for a couple seconds the clock area on the screen but none of the adjusting "buttons" are functional.

This is happening after an issue last evening where the car would not start until after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Even then I had to put the keyless start switch in accessory mode first and then was able to start the car.

Any ideas on the clock adjust issue as well as what may have caused the "no start" issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

The Earth's magnetic field has nothing to do with GPS.

All they're talking about is the difference between true north and magnetic north. That difference has always been there. They're just saying that magnetic north has been changing quickly lately making it harder to have accurate calculations for the difference between magnetic and true, which is different depending on where you are.

This relates to compasses NOT GPS. There is NO way the Earth's magnetic field could cause this time problem or any GPS position fix problem.

We need to try to stay away from silly ideas.

I used the 660 code to get into more stuff. Went to the GPS info screen. Then it basically kept refreshing that and seemed to lock up. Couldn't go back, couldn't get out of diag. Turned car off, opened door, GPS info screen still on....came out to car 10 minutes later, and it was off. I will go make sure it didn't kill my battery. Sigh

EDIT: Just went out. Battery and nav is fine.

I'm sure I will get massively flamed for this BUUUUUUUUUTTTTTT, my phone has both a clock and NAV so I couldn't give a rat's ass about what the car does. The newest NAV in these cars is ancient so why do you need GPS? And if it matters what time it is, look at your damn phone. You don't need to stick a dollar store clock anywhere. I like having a NAV unit because it has the best sound and I like the touchscreen adjustment of other functions, but GPS and the clock are irrelevant.

Some people just like things to work as they should. Nothing wrong with wanting to fix things that are broken.

I also always navigate with my phone for short distances. For road trips I like to have the car Nav working to show how much time is left. Also it's nice to just see which streets are coming up. I use it all the time to get ready to turn when I'm not really familiar with the area.

The last map DVD that came out was in 2016, so 3 years is ancient now?

Certainly you can ignore the fix if we get one, but what's the point of trying to tell us we should be like you?

End of flaming from me.

The fact you are sure you'll be flamed shows you know what kind of comment you made. Seems rather sad to get snippy over people possibly being inconvenienced by an engineering flaw. I would take no pleasure, or spit bile if your cruise control or DIC went out from something other than normal wear and tear. Makes no sense to be snarky over it.
I'm assuming you quoted the wrong post. I'm just trying to save people from what would be very unfortunate.:)

I had to replace 2 of my wheels after encountering a road hazard on Dec. 23, 2018. I got my car back on January 4, after it had been repaired. Obviously my battery was disconnected as a part of the process. I have no clock and no ability to set the clock. The Nav also shows me driving around in a lake or in the woods. I came here hoping to find a way to set my clock. I'm sorry to see that so many other people are having the problem and that there is no solution, at least for now. I figured I should go ahead and post, so that at least I can be added to the numbers of people affected by the problem. I hope that everyone who has the problem will let it be known, and that there will be a solution at some point! Thank you all for spelling out the problem. I really had no idea that it was something that would affect so many people!

I must live a charmed life. I came out of the barbershop on Saturday and my '06 STS was deader than a doornail. Hit the start and all the dash would go black. I caught a ride home and came back with my Ford Ranger and some jumper cables. I hooked up the cables and let the Ranger run for a while. The Caddy started right up and the clock still works. One thing I do different is I have never used the GPS time setting because there is no Time zone setting for Alaska Standard Time. The root cause of the starting problem was I had accidently put the car in accessory mode and run the battery down.

Which is probably why yours still function Kozzy Bear... you don't need the gps signal since you have selected it off, the radio saves some settings even in the event of a power failure.

Update for those effected. I spoke today with the tier 2 rep. Basically she took all the info, said she cannot comment or concern with other vehicles only if the owners themselves call in (so I suggest you owners get on that if you want to press for a fix). She did take all the info down and said she would reach out to push for a fix and if it did it would likely be a special coverage adjustment (much like the timing chain on the LY7 or catalytic converters on the 04-05 LH2).

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you guys on this. That GPS time button is a momentary soft button, not an on or off button. If you press it you will see that it doesn't change color or look like it's pressed like other buttons that yoiu select or deselect. The purpose of the button is to get you back to GPS time if you have changed your time settings. Your initial time will still come from GPS if you disconnect power for long enough.

The most likely reason that you didn't lose the time is that your battery still had enough charge to keep the time free-running. If you disconnected the battery for long enough you would be in the same boat as everyone else (not that I want you to test it).

If you think about it (even if you don't agree with me about the button) the date has to come from GPS. There are no settings for the date in the menu. And the date (week count sent out by GPS) is the likely cause of the issue.

Update

Did more digging, looks like Honda had the same issue last year....

GM tier 2 called back today as well. Wouldn't acknowledge the issue nor accept that others have the issue, said they would need to call, but did promise to send the issue higher up. Best I can say is again dial 866 790 5600 and continue to put in tickets so they push the issue.

I WOULD agree with you but I have my own case to back it up...

For one Kozzy said it was DEAD, not weak, dead as a doornail I believe was his phrasing, he left it in accessory mode.

The nav route settings (avoid toll roads, ferries and I forget the other two options) wouldn't ALWAYS return to default settings, only on some occasions. When this would happen my direction would also switch from car up to north up and all the voice call tags for numbers would be wiped. So it HAS to keep some memory, IE via the internal battery.

I know it has been said numerous times it doesnt but I know for a fact the older 02-05 Denso Seville Deville nav had a back up battery. This battery when discharged along with the cars battery would then clear all memory from the nav, however in the event of a quick change of the battery or a weak/dead battery the internal battery SHOULD keep settings... of course with the age of our cars Im betting those little internal batteries are basically shot. On the older Deville Seville nav when they would go completely and you would remove the battery it would require the software disc be inserted to reload firmware.

This doesn't however detract from the fact these radios and all owners will eventually be effected if a software update is not released. That's only going to happen if owners Unfortunately not as individual owners must call in and complain as GM wont accept heresy that other users are experiencing this issue per the tier 2 rep I spoke with yesterday.

End result if we want this fixed people will have to do something very difficult... pick up the phone... call 866-790-5600 and explain their issue...

I say this because it seems by in large people will come here to complain but not bother to take 5 minutes to make a call.

As everyone knows,my radio/navi was black screen.Further analysis,(before ship to specmo),last time out with car, everything working fine,(just no sts screen and radio).Walked by car couple days later, press fob button, and nothing. No door locks,No lights, nothing.Put charger on battery for a few hours and Radio and navi working again, and has been for 2 weeks NOW.Weird stuff. Also have since bought a battery tender, for winter months, when it doesn,t move for 2 weeks at a time.I STILL DON,T HAVE THE CLOCK FUNCTION,BUT THE RADIO/NAVI CAME BACK AFTER WHAT SEEMED TO BE A DEAD BATTERY?First thought,a short or something in the radio, but now seems fine after a battery discharge and charge.I can,t figure it out.Battery is only 3 months old.P.S. I DID HAVE A CLOCK AND DATE BACK IN OCTOBER,LAST YEAR,BEFORE A NEW BATTERY INSTALL?

I totally agree with 1Bad. Anyone who has the problem needs to call. If it gets addressed it will be only because of the volume of complaints. It's most likely fixable with new firmware (hopefully not a hardware limitation like Koz mentioned).

I'm tempted to call. But I would have to say I have the issue because they won't care if I say a bunch of people on a forum have the problem. I don't like to be dishonest though.

There was a time when Cadillac customer service would come on here and even post, but those days seem to be gone.
