Yes, the 4 is supposed to mean AWD. But because you can buy them on Ebay for few bucks or remove it in less than 10 min, I wouldn't trust on it. But if you have the VIN number, the best way is to run option check on Compnine (http://www.compnine.com/vid.php) and look for MX7 option code.
MX7 is described as MERCHANDISED TRANS AUTO PROVISIONS, O/D, AWD (ALL WHEEL DRIVE) AWD A/TRANS PROVISIONS(MX7)

 

I believe the factory added the "4" from 2007 and on for AWD. I purchased a "4" and put it on my 2006 AWD SRX

The other posters are correct. The 4 does mean AWD. If you have some VINS you would like me to check, feel free to send them to me and I will check to see if they are AWD. I will look into the 4 being added to the 2007 model year. I will let you know if I find out any information on that.

thanks for the offers on checking the VIN. I was able to check on the ones that I was curious about but if more show up I may have to take you up on it.

 

The build sheet info including the MX7 option and all of the others is on the inside of the door to my jack compartment.

It is good to be able to check the VIN before even going anywhere.
One car was only a 2 hour drive but the other one is listed on ebay in Stafford, TX. Both cars state AWD in the add or listing but did not check out by the VIN. With such low build numbers a SRX V8 AWD that has the equipment I wanted will be very hard to find, too bad the one I was looking at was in such bad condition.

 

The ads are not reliable, as many of us have found out while looking. I can't tell you how many SRXs we looked at that did not have some listed option (or package) as advertised. The opposite was also true. When looking we stumbled upon SRXs that had options that were not listed in the ad!!!!!!!

The ad is only as good as the person/dealership entering the info. That is why the vin search is so valuable, before you get all excited or make a futile trip. A phone call to the dealership to verify? Also unreliable.
