High mile XTS (to buy or not?)

Hey I found someone selling their 2015 XTS Luxury. Extremely clean and not a scratch. But...there's 290K miles on it. They're asking $3500.

It drives better than my wife's 08 XTS with only 80k miles on it tbh.

My issue is im nervous about buying a car with that much mileage regardless of how well taken care of it was. But I've heard of sone XTS's getting all the way up to 300K miles. Just seeing if anyone has some good advice.

PS they guy probably has some wiggle room, especially with that many miles. He's trying to sell it dead center what KBB is saying its worth.

Thanks guys.

If you feel you can drive for few years and 3500.00 its worth that chance.

But with 290K with the price of engines and transmissions with labor in that vehicle would be steep. If you can do repair work yourself, it would be different story.

I have 13 XTS bought new has been great vehicle and low milage, but I would hate to put engine or trans in it because of price to repair.

Can you get a pre-purchase inspection? if it needs say struts, that's insta-bucks with MRC, etc. Unless you are just gambling, I would have a mechanic inspect it. Worth an hour of labor charges. starter, alternator, spark plugs, fluids... that's just high miles without really good maintenance records so you at least know what is due or likely to break.

wife's 08 XTS (CTS maybe)

(It never hurts to ask, but you did say EXTREMELY clean, don't be insulting)

I have driven mostly GM but have had a lot of Fords in the last 20 years. GM makes better FWD trans. Period.
This 3.6 is mature and widely used. You must use Dexos, the creme de la creme of Synthetics.
Be ready to keep an OEM Battery in it, or you may regret it.
We have a 2017 Luxury 65K that my spouse hates because it's not a Brougham or a TownCar.
I love it because it's not a boat. It's nimble and fun. But luxury touches everywhere.
The Mag Shocks are long lived and adjustable with a small wrench, but are pricier than regular struts.

A much better second or teen car than a foreign or import. In most cases.
Of course have your mechanic inspect it. He can spot things you or I could not.

The Mag Shocks are long lived and adjustable with a small wrench? Please elaborate!
I understand why you think it could be a good teen car, but I find headlights poor (low-beams' distance and brightness) and side rear visibility terrible. My teen son feels similarly, but my wife loves the car and has no problem with it. Don't buy it for someone else or yourself without the driver trying it. I'm a previous Buick Lesabre owner and current Lexus LS430 owner. Both have much better visibility (although LeSabre's low beams were even worse). In general GM headlights are poor. Rented GMC Terrain and I felt like I could not see at night.

You use an 8MM open end wrench on a stud that screws into the lower control arm. You can access from front usually without jacking. This is where the link rod to the shock control on the fender apron mounts. Break it with the wrench, finger it out. Twist to change rod length. Shorten will soft, lengthen will firm. I just road test until both sides feel even.

I have been lucky my head and tail leds havn't needed replacement. They are pricey.
I Never owned a LeSabre or LS430, but I loved my TownCar. XTS greenhouse has better visibility, though.

Our 20 Jeep GC has blind spot detection. I Want It on my next car.
And, the GC is actually a better replacement for a full size luxury car than you could imagine. The low rung Laredo 4x4 leaves little to be desired and it's 3.6 VVT pulls stronger than the Cads 3.6.

Teen car. Aside from the cue, the air suspension and the mag shocks, it's a pretty conventional FWD car.
Were I a youth impressing dates. I would prefer it to a Camry hands down (My neighbors teen has a Toyo).

You are going to have to help your teen/20's with todays tech, even on KIA.
But, that is what is great about these forums.
Older cars are simplistic, but they are a handling, braking, airbag-less Death Traps. Relatively speaking.
I have HS friends that didn't make it driving old school tech.

Jeep GC (Grand Cherokee): my parents have owned one, always Limited trim for at least 20 years. Perfect and luxurious. My brother-in-law's brother too for 10 or so years. His latest is an absolute total nightmare. Thousands upon thousands of dollars of repairs and non-stop issues, just out of warranty. He buys cars for "fun" and "coolness" (vs me for comfort and longevity) and used to rave about this Jeep. Now he rants.

I owned a 1990 Plymouth Acclaim for 19 years even with the Mitsubishi transmission (A604?) that was sketchy. No Chrysler hater. I love my parents' Jeeps. But I see Stellantis and issues with Jeep and the only remaining Chrysler (Pacifica) and I will not touch a new Stellantis. VERY careful with Ford and we will see how my Lincoln Nautilus holds up (not the post-2024 newest, has a decent track record). I do consider reliability. Looking for decent, not perfect. Keep your Jeep if it is good, but be very wary of new ones. I wonder who will own the brand in 5 years and if it can be saved. Pricing has gotten crazy too. I am skeptical of Cadillac too, but the XTS has a better track record than many others. CT6 transmission woes, etc. I will not buy most cars new, and especially a new or heavily revised model.

My parents had two town cars. A while back, 1990s? Fantastic cars but very very light steering. quite a different feel. More luxurious in a classic way than most cars today. They never used to keep cars too long. Too bad. Glad you like visibility in the XTS. That's my major issue with it but not everyone has a problem with it.

My 2013 XTS-4 Premium (bought exactly 4 years ago) now has 173000 miles. Except for CUE's HMI and the headlight aiming being defective, I feel I could double the miles! People look at it, it looks far more expensive than the $3500 KBB Trade-In Value. The color is Sapphire Blue, I was born in September (birthstone= Sapphire), and my late wife and I were married in September.
