Front struts need replacing 2006 DTS

My 2006 DTS has a clunking sound from under the front left fender. I already replaced the control arm, the bushing was bad. I am pretty sure this sounds like a strut mount. I just don't see anything else loose.

1) How do I tell if I have the magnetic suspension I read about? I am guessing I look for leveling switch and cable coming from the strut?
2) Is there a way to tell if the struts are working, I am looking to test the front and back system to see if the struts need to be replaced?
3) Can I change just the strut mount if that is all that is bad?

Thanks

You can change just the strut mount, though you go through all the effort to change the strut itself, and given the age of components, it wouldn't hurt to change everything.

Magnetic suspension came only on the DTS Performance models, so if you have a Performance, you have magneride.

Struts work or they don't, if your car bounces over bumps they are working. A general rule of thumb to tell when struts are shot is that they are leaking.

How many miles does your DTS have?

Personally, if you can get them at a decent price, I would go with ACDelco. I've learned, both on my Cadillac and my Chevrolet, that the old saying Keep your GM car all GM is around for good reason.

On the other hand, I've heard lots of members use Monroe with good luck. I used some Monroes on my 96, and they worked well, but there were some details that I found lacking. You may even be able to get the quick mount assemblies, which are the whole thing pre-built and ready to go.

The strut mount alone is $45, so that is definitely cheaper, but for all that effort it seems odd not to replace everything. That being said, it's your car and your money.
