Good morning/afternoon,

I just recently purchased a 2016 2.0T RWD ATS and in the beginning stages of modifying it to my liking. Just curious and interested what others think is better between powder coating the stock rims black or just purchasing some lower end aftermarket black wheels? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I think it just depends on what you wanna do, would you be changing the tire size or you gonna run the stock run flats. I my self liked the stock rims buuuut i really liked this set of FAST FC04 rims aftermarket and man are they nice and wayyyyy lighter then stock rim and tires, to sum it up id see whats your price point and are you willing to pick out a set you really like or just powder coat it then save up for a set you really like just dont wanna dish out the money for fresh tires and rim. Best of luck

Yeah, I definitely would be using the tires that are already on the car and just powder coat the 17” stock rims. I just know that if I go to an aftermarket rim, that 17” wheels just wouldn’t suffice and I would want bigger. Lol. Anybody have any experience with powder coated wheels and their longevity? Those FAST FC04 rims look really nice! What size are they and what tires did you purchase?

If you have the factory 17's then a wheel upgrade is definitely in order imo. If you have the 18's then just powdercoat them as they look good, unless you want a bigger wheel. I think 19's are the sweet spot for the ATS.

Powdercoating is the most durable finish you can do, it will last. A proper paint job is the next option below that. Black can look good, but it depends on the wheel. If you do black on a really intricate wheel, all those details get lost and take away from the wheel and thus the car. Just my opinion.

I'm putting these on soon, Niche Vosso 19's in anthracite gray. They are darker than they look in this pic.

By far, if you are happy with the tires and wheels that you already have, the most cost effective route to go is to have your factory wheels powder coated to achieve the look that you want.

I bought my 2015 coupe exactly one year ago and the very first thing that I wanted to do was to dump the run flats that came on the car. So it was an easy decision to have the factory wheels powder coated black at the same time the new tires were put on. I paid $100 a wheel to powder coat - a far cry from buying new black wheels to replace the originals. After a year on the car, the powder coating has held up fantastically well and the wheels look like the day they were put on. No regrets whatsoever.

With all that being said, I have two questions. Aside from Craigslist or other local social media outlets, is there any other place that will purchase your stock wheels and tires? If I did go to a bigger wheel/tire size, would I have to purchase a new set of TPMS sensors or you can reuse the ones on the stock wheels? Thanks in advance!
