Afterblow Feature -- Functional or Gimmick??

Does having the "Afterblow" feature activated offer any advantages with keeping the condenser box free of any moisture and odors? I know it has been said that it is better to turn the AC off while leaving the blower on a few miles from your destination to dry out the box and avoid foul smells. If this is feasible, how much would a dealer charge to turn the Afterblow function on as the use a special diagnostic tool not accesible to the shade tree mechanis. I get odors sometimes but the dealer was not interested in turning this feature on to see if it resolves by issue. I don't smell anything when using the heat.

The service manual says this can be activated if odors are a problem and the dealer has done the evaporator cleaning procedure(involves drilling a small hole in the case and spraying a cleaning agent on the coil then sealing the hole. Aside from using the dealer's programing tool, I don't think there is a way to turn this feature on.

a compitent tech should be able to enable the afterblow and apply a deodorizer to the evap core. this is covered under the bumper to bumper warranty
Well, they deodorized the evap core but do not know how to run on the afterblow so can you elaborate what the name of the scan tool used by the tech is? Also, it is in the shop right now due to water coming running in from under the passenger side dash on each side of the passenger's feet and on the driver side, I guess where it ran over from the pasenger side. You could hear a trickle noise made by the fan blades hitting the water in the blower box under the dash and it went away when you turned the climate control off. I had a prior issue in August with the AC drain hose being stopped up, which was cleared, so we shall see what the issue is this time. Unfortunately, it was raining also so I don't know if it was rain water getting in the box or condensate water from the AC (light was on) as the AC system was being used by the automatic climate control. Whew. I love this car but the issues just keep on coming.

Unfortunately, they are blaming the odor on a prior water issue for which they have replacement carpets on order since "September", if you can believe that. I will try again after the carpet is changed but meanwhile, my B to B warranty is ticking by. Thanks for your input 99.

Afterblow Enabling

Afterblow is a feature that dries the evaporator core by operating the blower motor after the engine is turned off. This reduces the amount of microbial growth that can create undesirable odors. The vehicle does not come equipped with the afterblow feature turned on. If the afterblow feature is required due to an odor concern.

Use the following procedure in order to enable the afterblow mode:

1. Connect the Scan Tool.

2. Turn ON the ignition.

3. Select HVAC Control Module.

4. Select Module Setup.

5. Select Afterblow Option.

After the HVAC control module has been programmed for afterblow, the following conditions must be met for afterblow to operate:

• The engine has been turned off for at least 30 minutes.

• The ambient air temperature is at least 21°C (70°F).

• The A/C compressor operated for more than 2 minutes.

• The system voltage is at least 12 volts.

Once the above conditions have been met, the following sequence of events will occur:

1. The blower motor will run for 20 seconds.

2. The blower motor will be off for 10 minutes.

3. The blower motor will run for an additional 20 seconds.

4. The blower motor will be off for 10 minutes.

5. The blower motor will run for an additional 20 seconds.

Thanks RAB. I did finally have it turned on after I found the procedure in my shop manual and gave the dealer a copy. My problem was that the drain was clogging up so water was sitting in there but I like the fact of having the box dried out when it is really humid in the summer just to be safe. I forgot to update this thread to let everyone know and its members like you that make this a great site.
