Active aero grille shutters or not?

Getting conflicting information here about my '13 ATS Premium –- does this car have the active aero grille shutters or not? Was it available for this MY? I read it in a couple places that this was a feature but I'm not seeing it on my build sheet. Is there a way to tell?

I disagree, really depends on how much heat you are dealing with. If the car has sufficient cooling capacity to keep it at normal operating temperature with the grill shut then it is pointless to have it open. You have a thermostat on your radiator to make sure your car gets up to normal operating temperature, if you were correct you would remove it. For the same reason you should have the radiator fan running all of the time but no one does because it only needs to come on when there is too much heat.

It was a great car, a black limo really, leather front bench that needed replacement and a mohair rear compartment that was mint. Found it through Hemmings in Minnesota for $6000 and brought it back to Cali and spent $1500 on chrome work. Turned it for $10,000 (in the 70's). You could run it up to 15 mph in low and drop it in high and torque your way to over 100. One time, a friend played chauffeur and drove me and the girlfriend out to a fancy restaurant for dinner in SF....What an entrance.

David, I think you are looking at engine temp while he is talking about underhood temps. You are correct, the engine oil and to a lesser extent, the coolant both need to heat up to their planned operating temps for optimal performance and wear. However, the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump, etc would be very happy if the underhood air temp never went over ambient. Maybe there's an argument at really cold temps for some things it would be better to warm up.

I don't believe the louvers will affect the reliability of the parts in the heat and I don't believe there is would be a measurable benefit by opening the shutters permanently or even louvering the hood. Parts that are "very happy" doesn't really mean anything unless they were going to fail during the lifetime of the car (then the current owner still may not care) and the lower temperatures prevented it (delaying it a little wouldn't matter much). Obviously virtually all ATS owners agree with me, don't care or don't know enough to disable the shutters.

Good point on the louvers closed when the car is cold. I would expect this helps the engine get up to operating temperature some amount quicker, and helps the heat come on quicker.

I am interested in hearing if anyone believes it is a good enough idea to actually do something about it (disable or remove the louvers). I can't say it is a bad idea.

I wish my diesel pickup had active grill shutters. The main grill cover needs to go one when it is near freezing and for really cold temperatures there is a second one to cover the lower air inlets but if it warms up during a trip then they have to come off again. Not a big deal but shutters like some of the big rigs have would be nice. I have been tempted to make another cover for winter to go over the small radiator under the cab that is used to cool the fuel returning to the tank from the high pressure injection system since cooling diesel fuel during the winter isn't desirable.

My only concern about the ATS shutters will be reliability as it gets more operating hours on it. I keep an eye on gauges to catch problems and when the weather gets nicer I will investigate to see whether there is a simple way to unplug and manually open the shutters just in case they decide to malfunction while on a long trip or at some other inconvenient time. I haven't done an in-depth investigation but even with the shutters closed there should be some airflow through the engine compartment. Although it wouldn't be comfortable for the driver/passengers the heating system can extract significant heat from the coolant and with shutters stuck closed you could probably limp it for a reasonable distance with the heater set for maximum and the windows down while operating the engine at the minimum load possible.

Has anyone logged coolant and oil temps with the shutters open/closed? Has anyone put a thermocouple underhood, and in several locations, to know what happens to temps when the shutters are closed. I get the point about what if they fail shut, but the rest seems to be speculation without data.

I just took my '15 performance with the driver awareness package in for an oil change. Because I was a bit confused as to who had and who didn't have the active grill I asked if the would check and let me know. The shop manager came out and looked at the grill and said I do not have it. When parked hot or cold my grill is open and the louvers are fixed. Someone said that if you have the active grill then the slats would be closed when the ignition is off which seemed odd since closing them on a hot day would trap all of that hot air in the engine compartment.
So now I'm really confused; but I guess it doesn't matter much, I don't have drivers assist and I don't have an active grill. Why do they have to makes things so hard?

I inquired about this feature at the dealer today when I picked up my car and was told that my car did not have this feature. Any truth to this?

C "T" ess: The 2015 ATS Coupe appears to not have the Active Aero Grille - half way down page 40 of brochure.
The 2015 Sedan has it on 2.0 and 3.6 engines as optional for Base and Luxury, and standard for Performance and Premium - half way down page 42 of brochure (BUT it is deleted when the Sedan has the Driver Assist package due to the radar being mounted where the grilles would be located).

Welcome to the forums!

You can try gmpartsgiant.com or some of the other GM parts websites here in the States and see if they will ship to you. I don't know if you can just buy a single shutter, if that is what you are asking about. Here is the whole assembly at gmpartsgiant.com: 23145527 - Genuine GM Deflector Assembly, Front Bumper Fascia Air (gmpartsgiant.com)

Since it's a whole assembly, this is mainly an OEM part so not much aftermarket options (yet). Here's one from NAPA Auto Parts that's a little cheaper: Radiator Active Grille Shutter Assembly NOE 73199371 | Buy Online - NAPA Auto Parts (napaonline.com)
