A little support for the 2014 CTS Sport Wagon

I've been thinking of selling my 2014 CTS4 Sport Wagon 3.0 Luxury...since picking up a 2005 GMC Yukon Denali in June of 2023 and the 2016 CTS V-Sport a couple years earlier the Sport Wagon doesn't get much seat time...

the current decline in used car values have made it easier to hold on to the Sport Wagon but I am asking for some support and/or criticism on either keeping it as a 3rd vehicle or moving it on down the line...

I don't find myself in need of the money it would return to my bank account but I don't like paying insurance and whatever else for a car that is really my 3rd choice now when deciding what to drive

any thoughts or experiences you care to share will be appreciated...

thanks,

Bill

Everybody's different. Multiple cars is fun - and a pain, especially if more than one is old.

If the car doesn't get driven often, the battery needs to be on a tender, you feel obliged to drive it etc. etc. And, as you've pointed out, they all need to be insured. Here, parking space isn't an issue but removing snow off and from around vehicles definitely is - although not this winter (so far).

I like my two vehicles but I have to say that I miss having a sedan now that Queen V is hibernating for the winter. That the XT6 is more than a decent driver eases the pain. It's been a month since I've driven the CT5-V and it'll be another two before I drive it again (weather dependent).

Plus don't forget that I'll have some decisions to make once the Lyriq comes in.

I have 4 cars. One is my CTS-V wagon, so I will remove my garage queen from this conversation. Then there is my wife's car, so now y'all understand I have two cars up for discussion. I have an Audi RS6 Avant, which was rather expensive and a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The TB has become my daily driver. It's 60 miles round trip, so I use the TB for that and the Avant has become somewhat of another quasi garage queen. The insurance is definitely a factor. As NorthernSRX mentioned, I am almost at the point of a battery tender. I have to make a point of driving her. Yeah, it's tough letting her go, but why have the wagon sit there, as beautiful as she is. There comes a time.

Well if you decide you want to sell that Wagon in about a year let me know... I might buy it off you even if I do have my wagon regardless if its running this fire breathing V8 I am waiting to put in it or still running the V6.

In the mean time I am going to probably look at getting a car to drive in the winter after ive been in PA for a while. Went to a local car show and the ONLY GM vehicle that even vaguely interested me was the CT5. I might try leasing in the fall next year. Really don't like most of the offerings. And NO I wouldn't consider the CT4. At 6'3" and 300 lbs I just don't fit. Same issue with the corvette. I am going through this thing now where I haven't really realized how much money I will be making. With this new position, my pension and all I will be right at $150k per year. With a 10% bonus available every year the company is doing well (Based on 95k). I have been told that in years that they are doing really well the bonus could be double that 10%.

I can probably afford to keep the wagon as a summer only vehicle, truck for towing/Hauling only and have a third vehicle for Daily driving and winter driving. But having a Vagon wouldn't be bad once I have the other stuff done.

I feel this. I’ll most certainly be selling my v6 CTS when I move back to Florida and all 3 cars are together again (plus the lady’s Audi thing, so we’d have 4). I barely ever drive my V2 currently with all the rain going on here, so it just sits. I definitely have to make a concerted effort to drive it with the Vsport as a daily- and once they are all together, the v6 CTS is extremely redundant. Hopefully I can get 8 grand for it.. maybe..

If it's your least favorite. Not that it is bad, but you like the others. It's easier and more cost-effective to pour money and effort into fewer cars.

Didn't we talk you off this ledge once before, Bill? :)

What's ironic is that likely most of us here as kids dreamt of a stable full of cool rides to own and drive.
Now that we are older, we are faced with the reality of maintenance, insurance premiums, etc.

I still have my first car, although it is rarely used (going on 2 years in storage) and takes a back seat when there are 5 daily drivers that command most of the attention. Don't even get me started on the insurance-- there are three drivers under 23 years old on my policy.

I sure never expected them to be Cadillacs at the time, lol.

The reality of caring for them does put a damper on the experience sometimes, but then when I'm either cruising around in them enjoying the ride or putting my foot down, it's exactly as I always thought it would be, and it's worth it.

On the topic of the wagon again, if it was me, I'd keep it, being that it's cool and uncommon and would definitely provide enjoyment value, even as a third car- unlike the v6 CTS sedan I have that's come to be superfluous and provides no fun value beyond what my V and Vsport do already. But that's just me, and if money isn't a factor, it just comes down to if you enjoy the car enough to justify keeping it and spending the time on the inevitable upkeep.

thanks everyone...yes, you all did talk me off the ledge some time back... ...winter has been gloomy round here and the couple/few snows we did get reminded me how much I hate having to leave a vehicle outside (the GMC) and having to clean snow off the truck...anyway...

I help take care of the GF's 2013 Malibu too so there are 4 and my sister's Corolla makes 5 (but I don't pay for everything on those vehicles nor house them)...

I really still like the way the Sport Wagon looks but when warm weather arrives it will most likely be the V-Sport that will get driven or the GMC when something needs to be moved or I just want the welcome room in the cabin when driving...again, the recent "offers" from Carvana/CarMax/KBB/etcetera have made it easier to hold on to it but at some point I just wonder if I should cut my losses...recent values have dropped a couple thousand since early/mid December to now and about 4K since the Fall but that is the nature of this false valuation we enjoyed during the Covid times...

I'll make sure to share what I do here but I wanted some feedback from my internet pals before I do anything...the good news is I won't be doing anything short of a big offer before the Spring thaw (although it was a very unseasonable 50F yesterday ;) )

thanks again everyone!

I hear you, Bill. I have to park my XT6 outside this winter and it's been a pain at times. Fortunately, we haven't had much snow here this winter so it's an infrequent task - and my backpack leafblower really speeds up the job...

I really like the CTS wagon and understand your conundrum.

My wife and I have discussed what we will do when we win our millions in the lottery. I'm buying one of the houses in the neighborhood. I'm going to gut it and build a ton of indoor storage...car storage. I'll keep the kitchen and master suite for guests so they don't have to stay with us. But it will be all about the garage space. But first, we gotta win!

FWIW: why I started looking for a CTS wagon a couple of months ago... my target is 3.6, AWD, Premium, preferably in that beautiful diamond white...

I dislike SUV's. They're ugly, they handle like pigs, and everyone has one.

The CTS wagon, on the other hand, is one of the few genuinely unique and handsome designs in the last decade. They handle quite nicely, and they're fairly rare.

And I rather like the idea of a handsome, well performing wagon, a contradiction of the stodgy family truckster image they had in years past.

They don't appear to be selling quickly at this time. Most of the CTS wagons on the car advert sites back in November when I started looking, are still for sale today. Many have price reductions.

Definitely a buyer's market. Apparently, if there's one thing that is as rare as a CTS wagon, it's someone looking to buy one.

They've become one of the 'forgotten vehicles', that some day we'll look back and think: remember when you could buy one for...

interestingly Carvana's "tracking" showed price of used cars up a few percentage points and CTS wagons up a couple percentage points but they still offered less money than they did 10 days before...Vroom is now out of business...

my wagon isn't going anywhere for the time being...I do wish I had more room to park them as whenever I look at the Sport Wagon I still find the design fresh and exciting...

thanks everyone

Bill

Perhaps it's time to consider that garage addition you know you need.

What I've seen of Carvana is that they are very high priced. Same for Carmax. Before I settled on a sportwagon, I had been looking at Lexus ES350, and those two were probably 25% over what everyone else was asking.

Looked at the Lexus b/c my Camry has been indestructible. They're nice, well built, but kinda boring to drive, and average looking at best. In comparison, Cadillac knocked one out of the park with the wagon's design. It just looks right.

Hmmm... just spotted a '12 in Black Diamond, might be worth a 2 hour drive to look at. That would be pretty.

There's actually a black diamond V/manual wagon for sale near me, but it's a bit out of my price range.

Stopped at Aldi the other day after work to pick up meat & cheese and scored the spot directly in front of the exit door.
When I stepped outside after shopping,I looked at my car and thought "Still sexy".

she has gone to Carvana...I hadn't driven it much since buying the GMC and having that and the V-Sport and only a 2 car garage, I didn't want to leave the Sport Wagon out in the weather on the driveway...

I was sad to see it go as I've had it since 2015 and it has been a good car to me...

The wagon is beautiful. But 3.0 vs 3.6TT is no contest, I would have favored the VSport as well. I still have my old gen 2 premium luxury FE3-conversion as an upgrade for my wife. One can only keep up with so many cars, then it becomes a collection.

I hope no one will mind me hanging here as well as haunting the Escalade and V-Sport Forums as I have been a part of this Forum for a long time now and owned my 2nd Gen CTS for a long time too...

I had no real issues with the 3.0 LFW...good motor in a good car that looks as fresh today as it did when introduced...
