93'-96' fleetwoods, fixing broken windows

I've had two of these type of cars and I know that broken windows are a common problem. The plastic slide that moves horizonally within the door while the window seems to break in the middle. My current car has had the rear passenger window broken for quite some time but recently the drivers window has broken. I took the clip out and took it to a local machine shop to get a quote. Fortunatly there is a little more room that could be utilized but isn't so hopefully these new parts will be stronger then stock. Replacing them requires removing the door panel and sliding the clips out (this can be a little time consuming because the track is bent shut at either end.

the reason I bring this all up is because as with many machine shops the first part is the most expensive and each following parts is cheaper. I'm kind of curious how many people have at least one broken window and how much you would be willing to pay for a clip. I will be placing my order within a day or two so how many I get will be based off of interest in the part. Just to give you a ballpark price it should be somewhere around $10-15 per part.

Dan:

I bought a fleet not to long ago and that was one of the problems noted with the car. Truth be told - I spend about $10 and about 2 hours fixing all four windows. Taking the door panels off wasn't too hard (easier with special tool and remember too much force can pull the tabs off the door panels). The next issue was shaving the replacement slide down to size to fit into the track [you're right either end is tappered] - but I was able to do it. I would recommend that you lubricate (at least WD40 thought silicone is the smarter way to go). Hope this was helpful

that's awesome. I went into the cadillac dealer with this issue a little over a year ago and they told me the only way to get the clip was to buy the entire window regulator unit which was just over $300 at the time. I guess now I can go to any gm deal and buy the clip directly. Thanks, you guys have been a lifesaver.

interestingly enough, the local chevy dealer had 4 in stock for $3.74 a piece. Unfortunatly rather then being stock they looked like the attached picture. They seem to actually work better, partial because it was freshly regreased but partially because they can rotate. I feel confident that these are less likly to break then the originals.

Wow, that's news to me too!
Too bad you guys didn't pass this on a few weeks ago, you could have saved one of my grumpiest customers quite a bit of money.
The real problem is his other window is starting to do the same thing.
Now if I call him he'll just be mad I didn't fix it this way before!

Yes, they stopped using those original-type sliders a while ago and replaced them with the rollers for obvious reasons--mainly the sliders have a few weak spots and can snap easily. The rollers don't break.

The driver's side doors of my '95 have fresh rollers, but both passenger ones are still going fine on the original sliders. It was a VERY easy fix, especially since you don't have to drill out the rivet or anything like some instructions say, you just have to bend the end of the track out a bit and tap the roller sideways (we used a screwdriver in the roller hole, then tapped the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer until it was in past the rivet and rolling free.

On my two '94 Fltwds, one has a left read window broken, and the other has a right rear window broken. Haven't fixed them yet, or even opened them up, but I suspect the same problem as you all describe. I just keep the window lock on at the drivers door controls.

Thanks for the offer Dan, but I would hate to commit to a price and not have the part work as well as the OE replacement.

Thanks for all the information on the window fix. One day I'll put it to good use.

as you can tell I didn't actually have any machined since gm had a replacement part available (gm part # 966-6748). Just order up to 3 per window and it is a pretty simple replacement. It was a little snug to push in which is a good thing and don't forget to lube it, white grease works best.
