2011 SRX Lift Gate Problems

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and could really use some help. Been a long time fan of Cadillac and have had an STS, CTS, and now an SRX. Our SRX is a 2011 model and we just recently started having issues. It has roughly 50k miles.

- The Lift Gate - Just took the SRX in for an oil change. Once we left, we found two problems. The tire sensors were never reset and our lift gate started having problems. The lift gate would open part way and then go back down by itself. If you were lucky enough to get it all the way open, it wouldn't close all the way, it would just stop part way.

- We took the car back to the dealer a few days later and they reset the tire sensors. When we tried to use the lift gate, it worked perfectly... go figure.

- The Battery - About a week later, we went out to the garage and the car was completely dead. So I replaced the battery. Not a huge deal because i understand batteries need to be replaced. I stopped by our local Advanced Auto and purchased their top of the line battery which cost about $200.

I was hoping that the new battery would make the lift gate problem go away, but it has made it worse. The lift gate will only open a little bit and then goes back down. The latching motor/mechanism sounds like it is working properly, but it won't open all the way. I did a little research and people were replacing the gas strut on the passenger side to fix. I just replaced this strut (Part #22745513) and the lift gate still is not working.

Would love to get some advice on how to fix this issue versus taking to the dealer again. I'm not saying they did anything wrong, but i find it odd that we never had a problem until we too it to them for an oil change...

Thanks in advance!

----------

Something else i should mention... while the dealership did the oil change, they fixed a recall issue with the sunroof drain lines. Could this have had an effect on the lift gate? I've heard that water can sometimes drain onto the lift gate motor???

First of all, the sunroof drain lines are not a recall, they are a special service bulletin. Here it is:

I am shocked they would perform a procedure, especially of this magnitude, without your consent.
From my 12 manual, assuming your 11 is the same:

The power liftgate may be
temporarily disabled under
extreme temperatures or low
battery conditions. If this occurs,
the liftgate can still be operated
manually.
If you shift the transmission out of
P (Park) while the power function
is in progress, the liftgate power
function will continue to completion.
If you shift the transmission out of
P (Park) and accelerate before the
power liftgate latch is closed, the
liftgate may reverse to the open
position. Cargo could fall out of
the vehicle. Always make sure the
power liftgate is closed and latched
before you drive away.
If you power open the liftgate and
the liftgate support struts have lost
pressure, the turn signals flash and
a chime sounds. The liftgate stays
open temporarily, then slowly
closes. See your dealer for service
before using the liftgate.

Can you make sure the battery you bought is not a dud? When was it manufactured?

The battery has a manufacture date of 9/2015. It seems to start the car without issue or hesitation. Here is a picture of the label. Thanks so much for responding. Hopefully we can figure this out together!

I'm having issues with my lift gate as well! It almost crushed my wife while she was loading groceries in the back when the hatch closed down by itself! Now, when you hit the button the hatch opens all the way, goes down about 10", back up, then back down all in about 10-12 seconds. It will not stay up. Vehicle is out of warranty so hoping to find some help like you!

Turn the control to manual, and try the hatch by hand. If it won't stay up on it's own in manual mode, it's the auxillary cylinder on the right side not providing enough oomph (or possibly the motored hydraulic one on the left). If it stays up in manual, then it's the motor itself (or controller) that's faulty.
