Anything more than 10-12% is excessive.....smurf, if they are not removing and draining/cleaning the intercooler it is bound to happen again. To date, it appears GM is only trying to bandaid this and not address the root cause. Although the tune is easy to blame, to date we see no signs of a good tune having any effect on the failures. Pistons cannot compress liquid, and when they try, they break.

Agreed, but my dealer is telling me that GM is waiting till 28% to replace/service the engine - which I am not pleased about. It sounded nuts when I heard that so I was hoping someone here that works for/at a dealer could look it up to verify as my contacts aren't very useful at the moment.

I'm still befuddled about this whole thing. If the fluid buildup really is to blame, winter should provoke the issue and we'll see more failures - hopefully threads will appear on malibu or regal forums...

For those of us without definitive issues yet, what's the general recommendation at this point?

I have the DiabloSport but am back on the stock tune for now (no point in the extra power with winter coming up). Car is under warranty for a little while longer and if I do end up having piston issues, I don't want the tune to have any impact on my coverage. Just got my car serviced this past weekend and they've already loaded the ECM tweak + colder plugs.

Add me to the list now. My engine just blew this afternoon under a full throttle run when the misfires started and she blew. 38K miles, auto. I just hope the warranty covers this or at least part of it. I do have some mods on the car, but my dealership (whom I purchased my Camaro through), is pretty good on mods.

My motor is pooched using 1 litre of oil every 1200 km. Going in in the new year to have the motor pulled and checked. Just fought with GM for weeks to get them to do something. I used 96 octane fuel and I have 44,000 km/27,000 miles.

this list is useless anymore, we cant update it and i have found out failures are in the hundreds with no 100% answer on the cause or even as range of build dates or vehicle mileage.

My engine failed at about 5000 miles. there was a hole burned thru the top of the piston, i forget which cylinder. GM would not authorize repairs due to modification/tune. the engine was pulled and replaced with one from a wrecked 2013 ATS.

The forum does not permit members to edit posts after several days (10 the last time I checked). If someone wants to post an updated list here, I can paste it into the original post.

How did they know it was tuned? Couldn't you flash it back to stock?

ADD ME TO THE LIST AGAIN!!!!!!!! Blew another motor. less than 7000 miles and 2 blown motors!!!!!! im done F this i have only had GM's all my life no more never again. my first and last cadillac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol, let's not blame Cadillac for your Chevy motor. Even the CEO of Cadillac complained about subpar power plants and said they plan on developing their own engines.

I don't think he tried to hide the modifications some of which were obvious. And if I recall, his was from an extreme lean condition in one cylinder and not the same as the topic of this thread.

A hole burned into the top of the piston can only occur from lean and detonation (as Hoosier correctly states) and that would not fit into the group of failures this covers. I suspect a faulty knock sensor or a tune from someone that desensitized the knock sensors.....even a failed injector on that cylinder would most likely not have burned a hole through with the rest of the fail safes working. Now, a piston with a broken ringland that is still driven any length of time could/would "blow torch" through the damaged portion and melt that over time, but that would show as this example:

Would have liked to see Shooter's case escalated because he (or his tuner) thought it was a faulty injector which certainly would have been covered by warranty. I was also surprised that a bad injector didn't cause some code to be thrown.

I have a 13' ATS 2.0L 6M. It's currently at the dealer (again, for like the 10th time) so I can't check the build date, but I want to say it's around 3/2013. I had no issues until around a month ago when it died on me as I came to a stop. It restarted, but it's never idled smoothly since then. I've never once had a CEL, and no codes were stored. A few days later I pulled into a Home Depot. When I came out 15 min later, it would crank but wouldn't fire. It took about 15 min of cranking attempts to get it to start, and once started it was misfiring really severely--still no CEL or codes, though. Since then it's been to the dealer for rough idle about 4 times. I finally contacted some friends at GM that at least helped me get GM's attention (+ a I wrote a bad review of the dealer's handling of this debacle). As of yesterday, the dealer mentioned possibly trying to get GM to buy my car back. It still runs and drives, but I have no confidence in it. They performed the TSB right before Christmas, which includes cold temp spark plugs and a new ECU tune, but like others have said, that doesn't solve the issue--it just is a mitigation effort to try to prevent more failures. On top of that, in my experience, the new tune seriously de-tuned my car. It has noticeably less power above 3500k RPMs and it feels like the boost has been reduced as well.

Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper. For what it's worth, my prior car was a 2012 Regal GS. I know the Regal has been a topic of discussion RE: are they having issues? My GS was a total lemon. It was at the dealer over 30+ days for the 11 months that I owned it. It was bad enough that GM ended up giving me a bumper to bumper GMPP for 100k miles. They replaced the turbo, the timing chain was replaced, a wheel bearing went bad, + many other items. After the ordeal I'm having with the ATS, I'm not sure if I want to continue to own GM products for the foreseeable future. It kind of depends on how they handle my ATS from this point forward. It's such a shame, too--the ATS is an awesome car, when it is running! :)

Mine finally let go this afternoon. Tried since November 7 to get GM to do something. Had to come down to complete failure on New Years Eve, limped it into the dealer. I'm still getting "we can't be sure it's the motor, could be electrical?????"
