My oil pan looks too be caked with oil gunk around the seal...I noticed a slight oil burning smell but I am not losing oil at an alarming rate...I lost a quart in about 1,000 miles I have 88,000 miles on the caddie me and my brother plan too replace the seal...problem is I read older northstars require tranny removal and cross pipe...I'm going too assume its the same with my 05?...if that's the case I'm going to get my local mechanic too do this..do anybody got any input if this a weekend before a ball game 3 beer job?

Oil pan removal-

Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
Remove the front frame. Refer to Front Frame Replacement .
Remove the front differential carrier, if equipped.

Wait 'till you see what's next. You may decide some oil and an occasional cleaning is a better deal. :helpless:

My brother insist we can do this...my brother in law is an mechanic for an Cadillac dealership but that doesn't mean they will do the work any cheaper if I bring it to his dealership...I'm gonna ask him for some tips...looking underneath it doesn't look as elaborate other than removal front diffrential that we can support via jack stands but from what I understand it's a pain...I'm ordering the gasket now...I guess I'm going bleed my knuckles all weekend...pray for me

If you are talking the rear main seal, that does require removal of the transmission, not fun either.

In either case you've got a lot of stuff to remove/replace. I think you'll miss most of the second half of the game. Good luck

Oh, to be 36 again

Rear seal and pan are separate deals.

Before you start, be sure where the leak is. You have front and rear crankshaft seals, pan to lower block gasket (re-usable) and a lower block (101) to main block (100) joint.

Thank you do much...before any work I'm putting the car up on stands and inspect further I am gonna report here and see what's the damage...I have a feeling i may have a leak on the bottom of the front cover and rear shaft...after trips I can smell hot oil burning...possibly oil kicking back on the exhaust...the front of the oil pan is full of oil tho...I checked from the seals and apears to be a bit wet...also the bottom of the radiator has dried oil spots towards the right side

Check front diff for oil level and output shaft seal.

Now... if you could catch some of that, and pump it back into the fuel system, you could recycle and create a hybrid system.

I had a 1964 Rambler Classic 550 that burned 1 quart per 12 gallons of gas! I never had a problem with mosquitoes

Sorry to hear you are having to replace your oil pan gaskets - - I am sure that is not what you had planned to do this weekend! :).
