These AGM batteries take a lot of abuse with all the electronics and Start Stop. I usually will replace batteries at 4 or 5 years. Not for everyone, but this is my OCD.
You will need a 10mm socket, 13mm with extension.

2. Unplug small wire connector from terminal.

3. Disconnect battery terminal and push to the side.

4. Open Fuse Cover, push tiny clip to loosen holder. Carefully lift out of the way. ( A helper makes this go a lot quicker and safer) Disconnect + Battery connector.

5. Remove Base Battery Hold down 13mm with extension. * This is the hardest part of the job, I will save you the aggravation. " You can remove the bolt and the hold down from the top, however to put it back together, you insert the 2 parts from the bottom, there is an opening to slide the 2 plastic holders in from the bottom, then the screw from the top. It is impossible to do it any other way, took me over 20 min to figure this out. ** To make sure you put this back together correctly, after you think you did it correctly, you should NOT be able to lift up the battery on that end.

6. Notice 2 components to hold battery, the small part goes in first then the hold down second.

7. Reverse order after installing new battery.... Good Luck!

Great write-up. Implementing Smart Auto Stop to eliminate the stop start annoyance will also help extend battery life (and that of other components). I know AGM type batteries are designed to handle this type of abuse, but why allow it in the first place?

Perhaps someone who has the device can chime in that their AGM battery is older than 4 years. It is a little early for this testimonial because the 2017's are just recently 4 years old.

I agree with you on changing the battery out every 4 to 5 years, even if you don't think it is bad. In Florida, seems the heat/humidity combination is brutal on batteries. And when they have failed (had a battery on my XTS replaced under the factory warranty, only to have that replacement fail in 1 year), I have gone from not having any problem starting the car one day to a completely dead battery where I can't even charge or jumper the battery to get the car started the next day.

I don't have to think about doing this myself yet because my 2019 XT5 is still under warranty, but if you have a XT5 Platinum with the self powered alarm system, the alarm will go off if you disconnect the battery. Any recommendation or additional step to take in this case? I'm assuming you have to hook up a battery maintainer on the battery cables prior to removing them, but I sure hate to think about having live circuits sitting loosely around under the hood while I'm taking everything else apart.

I'm also one of those where I realized the auto Start/Stop function has stop working (it hasn't done it in months). While I don't really want it fixed (I'm not a fan of it), I'm wondering if I have some other problem, like a battery that is going bad. I probably reluctantly mention it to the dealer on my upcoming oil change.

I wonder if you open the driver's door, and hold the unlock button for 5 seconds until the chimes which indicates the doors will not auto lock. Forcing the unlock to remain would prevent the alarm from setting, and thus prevent triggering if the battery is disconnected?

Just a guess though.

Hence the term "self powered alarm." It has it's own battery or capacitor system to maintain operation.

The "self powered alarm" is the Power Sounder which will likely be triggered by the battery disconnect. Perhaps disabling the Inclination/Intrusion sensor will allow a battery change without triggering the Power Sounder. The Power Sounder sounds like the wail of a siren.

@Nice Ride ...did you disable the Power Sounder when you changed the battery; or were you able to change the battery without triggering the Power Sounder?

Which is my comment. Make sure vehicle remains unlocked (press and hold unlock button until chimes) and alarm will not be set. I doubt the Power Sounder will trigger on primary battery removal if vehicle is unlocked and thus the alarm is not set.

I think njacobson... the reference to the Power Sounder triggering when primary battery is compromised in the owner manual is if someone attempts to disable alarm by removing or tampering primary battery. IE the alarm is also monitoring the main battery and attempts to disable primary battery is considered an attempted theft of vehicle and triggers.

By turning off the interior motion and inclination sensors via the overhead console button as you highlighted in yellow does not totally disable the alarm. It only shuts off those two mentioned sensors. Door intrusion sensors or primary battery compromised sensors are still being monitored and could still trigger the Power Sounder.

To work on primary battery, ensure vehicle remains unlocked and alarm not set.

I now see the reference to override auto-lock. Sorry for missing that.

Sounds like the caution is to make certain the doors are not locked as experienced by @Umi

Did not have a maintainer on, the Alarm did not sound. After reconnecting the battery, on the display it stated to roll the window all the way down and back up again. Also, lost all pre-sets and GPS recent locations. No Biggy, I was happy to get the heated/cooled seat buttons working. With a helper, the entire process should take 20 min. Battery pricing was incredible on Amazon....

AGM batteries can, but can other electronics handle the constant voltage fluctuations caused by auto stop/start? I have seen the voltage spike from 11.2 to 15.3 V. With Smart AutoStart it runs at a steady 13.8 V, which would prevent a lot of electronic wear and tear.
