Worn Brake sensors?

932 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Benjamin Simon
I am starting to get the feeling that I'm needing new brake pads. After reading the other brake post I am wondering if my '97 has these sensors. Anyone know? I am not mechanically inclined, dont even have the space at my apartments, so I am pretty sure I will have to give it to a mechanic for this. Anyone tell me a rough guestament on how much this would run me?
Main question is whether or not I have a sensor.

Thanks guys, all of your experience and knowledge is priceless when put together.

I just changed my pads, and damn, it was a easy job. If you have a few sockets, a jack, and an hour of time, you can save $200. Let me know if you want directions.
If you did need new pads, a chirper would sound. It makes an annoying ringing noise. you can also tell by looking at the break pad. Either take the wheel off and if you can see it through the rim, and see how think the pad is.
97's dont have the sensors your talking about. Started with 98'. I was looking back at an old reciept from Goodyear when I had my brake's done. Cost me $340 and my car has the sensors which needed replacing because I drove the brakes down too low. Also the pads were replaced with ceramic and do not have squeaking problems, except after it rains or I wash the car. Bonus is the lifetime replacement as long as I own the car! So as long as your rotors are good then dont expect to pay over $300 (atleast if you go somewhere other then the dealer).

Hey Benjamin.. I also have a black 99 STS and i just cahnged out my brakes. When doing so there was a sensor looking thing that has wires running to it. I could not for he life of me figure out where it goes. Did you have thise same sensor and do you know where it goes? A picture maybe? Thanks..

If the replacement pads are OEM, the sensor comes with them, otherwise the sensor must be purchased separately and replaced along with the new pads.
I cut the damn thing off and tied the wires together. The message went away and I know to check my pads in 50K.
