I just got a 1962 Fleetwood w/a 390 and a transmission that
needs a rebuild.

I was quoted $1500 - $2200 by two different shops here in
Seattle. I'm wondering if ANY other, later year/model
transmissions would fit in my 62 ???

I'm hoping to find a decent used one, or get a remanufactured
later model trans that would not be so much and would like to know what my options are.

Like would a 1970 or 1975 or later fit in my 62?

Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick Goodwin

Some major research is required here. Your car has a Hydramatic. They stopped making these in favor of the Turbo Hydramatic in the mid 60s. The 64 had the option for either trans, but had a differernt engine (was the first year for the 429) What you need to find out is if the bolt patterns from the 429 will match up to your car. If not, you will need to find an adapter, which i'm not sure they even make. Those quotes sound VERY reasonable considering the nonexistant parts availibility of your trans. If you have to rebuild it, see if you can pre pay or lock them within a percetage of that price, or something.
