I keep finding excellent cars, but they're all over the country. Never in my backyard. Why?

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=02790&endYear=2014&modelCode1=FLEE&showcaseOwnerId=0&startYear=1981&makeCode1=CAD&firstRecord=26&sellerTypes=b&searchRadius=0&mmt=%5BCAD%5BFLEE%5B%5D%5D%5B%5D%5D&listingId=339121827&listingIndex=21&Log=0

Car looks to be in great shape, and that price isn't half bad, either. I've half a mind to schedule a flight out there right now. Not a fan of the chrome wheels, or those custom exhaust tips, but other than that, she looks like a winner.

Anyone near Washington, MI wanna check it out for me? Ha, ha....

Buy it and get it shipped. I now have a great shipping guy. It will cost 7-800. I got my 65 C10 truck shipped from Arkansas to upstate NY.

I'm on a flight tomorrow to buy one in Indiana. Don't let the location deter you. Its sometimes cheaper to fly and drive back than to ship.

Special edition!!

Don't be discouraged by distance. I purchased mine only by looking at pictures and had it shipped. Shipping was 700-800 and that was one of the more expensive shippers.

That looks like a beautiful car, although the photos are very grainy. If you are seriously interested, two things I would do before making the leap- first, have them put it on their lift and get pictures of the underside, especially the rear of the frame. Secondly, get a car fax. They are certainly not perfect, but at least it will give you an idea of where the car spent its life. I am guessing that it is a western or southern car-it looks way too clean to be from Michigan and having over 100,000 miles on it. I would think a triple black 96 with both a moon roof and chrome wheels, and being that clean will go in a hurry. If you're serious, don't delay.

why does it say the car is front wheel drive? lol
I think this is a flaw with autotrader. All of the Fleetwoods I see on there say they are front wheel drive.

I would steer clear just because of the exhaust tips. Who knows what other travesties await?

Did you purchase the sand colored 96 at the Cadillac dealer outside of Indianapolis? That car looks nice. I nearly purchased it this week but decided to keep looking for a local car if possible. I don't mind the fly / drive back - it's a great shakedown run, but I passed on this one for some reason.

Would love to hear your take on it after you return, and I'll keep trolling Atlanta Craigslist to find one that isn't ruined or overpriced. :)

Seconding that- I love to hear about adventures in car buying.

I just got off the phone with the dealership, I got the whole story on the car. Owned by an older gentleman (aren't they always?), and put away every winter. He decided to trade it in on something newer and smaller that his wife could drive as well. As any dealer would, he says the car is 99% immaculate, but I kinda believe it, seeing as how the driver's seat isn't even worn in the usual spots. Might have an inspection company look at it this week, reason being that if I don't buy the car, paying them to inspect is is cheaper than the round trip plane tickets. I'm heavily swayed, seeing as how it's basically the same as the green one I test drove in Rhode Island, and I loved that one, (aside from the 9k price tag)

Forgot to ask him about the exhaust tips. I assume it will be easy enough to return them to stock.

Looks like they might just be slipped on over the stock tail pipes. I was kidding - great looking car otherwise.

Dude that thing looks nice!

Don't you hate how the nice ones are never close by, that's just how it is.

Good luck car shopping.

I'd be very wary of rust. These things can look great on the shiny side and horrendous in the underside, like you would't even think you're looking at the same car.

Yes I did. I drove two in Georgia this past week. One was in McDonough '95 black/gray 117k asking $6500. It is in good shape overall, but the OEM rims had been replaced with wire vogues. Didn't look bad but I wanted all stock. I found a set of OEM chrome on Ebay but didn't want the hassle of selling/buying/changing tires. There were a few more issues that caused me to mark it off my list. The other was in Thomson '94 white/gray for $3300. It is a Brougham w/o vinyl top. Has an oil leak and needs some cosmetic work but still a good price. I've debated on getting it as well as a project. I had a friend check a triple blue out for me in Tampa, but the seller wasn't honest on the condition. The others I looked at were further away and most sold before I could make arrangements. Sometimes even before the seller called back. There is definitely a demand for these.

I bought the '96 in Anderson, IN for a few reasons. One was the color (Fawn Gray according to the original sticker) and the chrome wheels. The interior has very little wear in comparison to the others I've seen. Second, it had $1008 worth of service by the dealership after it was traded. New A/C compressor, new battery, hoses, brakes, filters, exterior bulbs, and oil change/tire balance and rotation. Tires are in good shape. Third, both key less entry remotes and four ignition keys were included. The two I drove only had one set and didn't know if it was key less equipped. Fourth, price was fair. It's not mint but not in bad shape for the price compared to others.

The ride home was great. 670 miles, 7 States: IN, OH, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA. And my back didn't hurt at all. (Just driving to Atlanta in my STS gives me backache sometimes) Drive was smooth, no vibration or shimmy. Acceleration and braking were excellent. Everything worked as it should. Even the power antenna and trunk pull down. Its going to my mechanic later this week to have a thorough inspection. I'm going to have him drop the fuel tank, flush, and replace the pump/filter as a precaution. Then its off to the body shop for new rub trim and some touch up. The only thing missing is the chrome trim that goes around the right tail light. Also, the driver's mirror glass is cracked. It has some flaws but not bad for a 16 year old car.

Sweet, I'm looking forward to having a similar journey in my future.

I called the dealer and put a deposit on the car so he holds it for me. I'm going to have an inspection agency check it for me during the week. If it checks out, my journey will be over the weekend, hopefully.

Hope it all works out for you. That's exactly what my next one will be: triple black with chrome wheels. It will have to be below the Mason-Dixon though. Keep us posted.

Thinking about skipping the inspection agency. Checked the carfax and the previous owner took the thing to a Cadillac dealership for scheduled maintenence every 4000 miles or so. Was stored during winter, so rust shouldn;t be an issue. Still gonna ask for pics of the undercarriage, though.
