Thanks to those of you who posted about rims being replaced in this thread. I sent a link to my service advisor and we went to bat for me (again). He just texted today that GM has agreed to replace my wheels and he hopes to have them in later this week.

Great news. Glad GM is moving forward with this.

So, I'm still dealing with the peeling issue. To recap, I had peeling on all my rims, dealer claimed GM won't replace them. Dealer said they could have the wheels refinished under warranty. The wheels were refinished and looked ok. So now its been over a year since the wheels were refinished and they are peeling and cracking all over again. Took the car to the dealer looking to just have the wheels replaced. I was told GM won't do anything because the wheels had been refinished. The dealer will simply have the wheels refinished again for me. But of course, as soon as my warranty is up, I will be stuck dealing with this on my own. All I wanted was for the rims to be replaced. Should I just call GM and fille a claim for replacement rims? Just frustrated and looking for ideas.

Yes this has been an issue. There has been a couple posts on this and some past conversations you can probably find on the forum. Different fixes for different people. Mine were replaced and covered under warranty at around 8k miles while others had to have them refinished under warranty. I would bring them into your dealer as most dealerships know of this issue. It wasn't just a CT6-V issue but also standard CT6 vehicles had the problem.

Got my refinished wheels back from the dealership....not happy. They must have re-machined the face of the wheels, there are metal shavings all on the inside of the rims (back of wheels are still peeling from original clear coat). There are blobs of clear coat on the edges. They didn't fix the flaking, just cleared over it and it seems as if they didn't clear the wheels entirely as there are dull rough spots towards the center of the wheels (could be overspray). The machined face has spots all over it, looks like water spots but it's under the clear coat....just a mess. All I wanted was the rims to be replaced under warranty and all I got was 2 crappy attempts at refinishing the wheels...now they look awful. Take a look for yourselves. If there is a Cadillac rep on this forum, please hit me up. Car is still under warranty and less than 16,000 miles on her.

Wow, that's embarrassing (as in, it makes your dealer look horrible)! My 4 new warranty replacement wheels are still at the dealer waiting for my tires to come in so I can get all mounted at one time. Service advisor had no trouble getting replacement authorized under the bulletin I listed above.

I think you meant to quote TC09CTS. My wheels have been replaced (not refinished) under warranty.

This is the response I received:

Dear Tom,

We appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns of peeling coating on your 2019 Cadillac CT6. While coat delaminating does occur, it is rarely due to a factory defect. Several factors will affect the life of paint and coating, such as: environment, maintenance, chemicals, storage, etc. Our experience has been that a defect attributable to the original manufacturing and assembly process generally makes itself apparent quite early in the life of the automobile.

After an automobile has been in service for several years, many factors can contribute to paint and coat chipping or peeling, which are beyond the control of the manufacturer. If you are in doubt, we would suggest that you visit your local Cadillac dealer again. They will inspect the vehicle for defects. The dealer will make the final decision as they are familiar with the local environment and have hands-on accessibility to your vehicle. Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Ender F.

Hey fellow ctv6 Blackwing owners. So I'm the original poster of this thread and I had all four rims replaced with bran new ones. Well here's the fun part, now all four of the new rims are peeling every spoke. I've gone to my dealer and started the claim. I just wish this wouldn't happen I really like the look of these rims, and the process for replacement has changed now. They take photos of each wheel that get sent to head office and they decide if it will be approved or not. Yes I mentioned the bulletins but they said that would not help with the process just that it's a known issue for gm. Anyway hope they take care of this customer if they want me to order the Escalade V :)

Love the car :)

Don't agree with this at all. Both sets of wheels for me started about a year or so later, and has happened to what 90percent of the rims used on these vehicles. That's def a bad process or rim design not external factors. Wow.

Update

They have now replaced all 4 rims again under warranty... on back order but its been approved.

So 8 rims total now.

Not sure why they can't just make rims that don't fall apart. 🤔 They seem to last about 1.5 years before the peeling starts.

Possible suggestion if you're interested (and if your car will be out of warranty in another 1.5 years): I had the dealer send my new-in-the-box warranty replacement wheels out to a detail shop for ceramic coating before they ever had tires or wheel weights mounted on them. It's only been about 4 months for me, but they simply don't get dirty at all any more - I'm wondering if the corrosive brake dust has something to do with the peeling problem, and by keeping it from sticking to the finish, the peeling is prevented? I also had my GM pads replaced with Porterfields at the same time, so I have less dust and none of it stays on the wheels. Fingers crossed my new wheels stay looking good for awhile.

Cost was around $300. Considering it would have cost me $100 for the ceramic plus two 1-hour round trips to the dealer to retrieve and return the wheels, plus my time to do the work, I thought that was a pretty good deal! :)

I wonder if this issue is limited to the 20” wheels.

Sorry, new to the forum. Just purchase a 2019 CT6 Plat BW.

When I was hunting for a new CT6, the sport I test drive had horrible peeling on the front wheels and hardly anything wrong with the rear wheels.

I thought maybe the previous owners and used a harsh chemical to clean his wheels and in the process, destroyed the delicate clear coat. After joining this forum and finding this thread, I can see that may not have been the case.

When I inspected the tires, they were well worn in the outside edges. Leading me to believe the previous owner enjoyed spirited drives. If they did, maybe the brake dust was what contributed to the clear coat failing.

The Plat I purchased showed zero signs of clear coat failure. But, I also have the 19” wheels. So I wonder if the manufacturing process between the 19” and 20” wheel differs and contributed to the issues many of you are having.

Seems to be most prevalent on the 20 inch 'V' wheels; I haven't read of it happening on other CT6 wheels.
Here's a picture of mine several weeks after the last washing; they used to be BLACK from brake dust before the new wheels, Porterfield pads, and ceramic coating.

I think someone used the word "disappointing" to describe this. As someone who likes the big cars from Cadillac, I've been looking at used CT6-V's and am glad I came across this thread. It really is surprising to see the difference from dealership to dealership in their response to this problem. As someone a little older, this car costs more than my first house. I'd like to think GM would take that into account when denying a claim on such an expensive car still under warranty. I guess it all comes back to whether the dealership cares about customer retention.
