I am replacing the wheel bearing / hub assembly on my 91 Deville. After taking the old one off, when I slide the new one on the splines it engages fine but does not seem to want to go all the way in. I could draw it on in with the bolts but it pushes on the axle (about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch) and I am sure this just can't be right. Or is it? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help. Frustrated and stranded - for now...

What you DO NOT WANT TO HAPPEN is for the axle to be drawn out of the transaxle. The correct procedure is outlined in the FSM (Factory Service Manual) but if you don't have one, You can torque the spindle nut to 150 lbs.ft, while rotating the hub assembly, then back the nut out and torque it again to 120 lbs.ft. This is to set the bearing in the hub assembly. I don't have my manual handy right now but I have used these numbers myself.

I have replaced many of these wheel bearings, mainly for ABS concerns.

Often, the axle spline will not go in all the way. Using the nut to pull the axle into the bearing and then applying proper torque, is an acceptable procedure.
