Wheel Advice

What is the general consensus for wheel size on the STS? I'm going to do an upgrade, and I don't know how big to go. I definetly don't want to go over 20in. I have a guy trying to get me into some nice 18's for a decent price. I have another dude in the area selling 20's with tires, mounted and balanced for around $1600. The tire size on the 20's would be 245-30-20ft., and 255-30-20r. I live in Cleburg,Oh. with crappy streets, would a 30 series be acceptable? Do you think the 20's would look to gawdy? Need some input from experienced STS'r's. Thanks in advance.

A 30 profile tire isn't going to look good with a 20 inch wheel. you need atleast a 35. A 30 will make the wheel look so small on the STS. If your planning on using a 30 tire you might as well go with a 22
Keep your original wheels! I'm sure you'll love your new look but if you absolutely hate the new ride, you could switch back. An upgrade in appearance is most often a downgrade in performance. Get ready for an unstable feel. That mostly depends on the offset of the wheel.
Only reason on the 30 series was that with the 20in. wheels the Revs. per mile are the same as stock. With 35's, the revs. per mi. are about 25 lower. Would this affect the ECM or speedo?

Go 20's, 255-35 all around. No screwin' around.
18's will be a waste of time...not to mention money.

997tt, I'm in Cleburg, Oh. home of the Eastern Conf. Champion Caviliers!! Anyway, I love the way those wheels look on your car, but I'm lookin for more wide rim chrome to offsett my Raven Black 05. You're right, i'll prolly go with the 20's and 255-35's all around. Good call, thanks for the comback. Goin Deutch again huh? Must be something about those Arians.(sp.)
I purchased chrome wheels for summer, but stayed with the stock size.
I have snow tires on the original STS wheels.

Please guys, think about it twice, don't do chrome!
It may be fine for the stock 17/18's, but pls don't go blingy on me :(

Maybe he just likes to spend money. He needs to keep in mind that potholes love low profile tires AND wheels.

75 series tires = smooth ride and fugly looks.
Well, I did put 55K on my C5 in Cleveland, Ohio, and I never had a prob with the potholes. The trick here is to keep your eyes on the road, and turn the steering wheel when a "hole" is approaching your wheel!
Bikedude, you didn't tell us your current wheel size, 17" or 18". As you probably know, the factory mounts 45-series tires on the optional 18" wheels. These are close to an optimum balance of comfort, performance, and appearance. Generally, 30-series tires don't play nicely with potholes. Generally, the larger the aspect ratio (the taller the sidewall) the more compliant the tire (the better it soaks-up road shocks). "Generally" is the operative word--tires vary widely.

Think about what's important to you and go to Tire Rack's Web site, http://www.tirerack.com/. Check their tire surveys and reviews.
obviously it just won't be as comfy with 20's on. the performance will be just the same though.
997tt, awesome look! I have a light platinum sts with stock rims, looking at the same ones you have. Do the 255's in the front rub if steering wheel at full lock? Did you mention selling yours?...
they don't rub at all, and yes i am selling them. The only thing is i'm in montreal.

pm me if intrested.
