There's a temperature sensor in there. At least that's what I've heard.

Yup, cabin air temp sensor.

Most likely a small aspirator fan (think small PC fan) that draws air over the thermistor.

Well that's boring. I was hoping it was like a microphone that is tied to the onstar that I could tap into and try to figure out some hands free calling or something.

The mic for OnStar is on the bottom side of the mirror. You can see the vent holes for it of you look straight up at the mirror.

But it would be easier to grab the audio in/out at the OnStar unit itself. Which is on the passenger side trunk behind the carpet.

Personally I would grab the audio in/out and leave the harness plugged into the OnStar. So when you press the OnStar button, the car will slow down the HVAC fan and what not when a call is in progress.

Well what about the console microphone behind the sunroof control bezel?

I have never used onstar for anything (Matter of fact in my car I have completely disconnected the module in the trunk)

Most of our cars are analog OnStar, so it doesn't work anyways.
