If I buy a car out of New York State, I don't have to pay taxes on it.. But what happens when I go to the DMV? Don't I pay taxes on it there anyway? What's the advantage of buying out of state?

I don't think there is any advantage unless you think you can get a better deal. You will have to pay tax in NY when you register it.

yes, you will have to pay sales tax at the DMV

the only real advantage would be like buying a car in Florida and driving it up (just be sure to get it rust proofed) since Florida dosn't have the harsh New England winters.

2 things to remember:

1) Cadillac looses their reslae value like crazy

2) in Florida, Cadillac's are a dime a dozen

that is how we got my car so cheap andin great condition, my mother got her car and her boyfriend got his car.

There can be big advantages. A southern car will have less rsut than ones form up north. I am sure you knew that already though! Sometimes you can find better deals & most of the people I have found here will put only a couple hundered bucks in the sales price on the title, so you dont have to pay that much in taxes. People up north should do that as well though.. ;)
