This was a surprise--had to swerve to avoid a car on the highway today, and I got the "stability engaged" message in the DIC. What stability system was used on cars without RSS? I know that StabiliTrac was optional on my car, and it doesn't have it (no wheel or chassis sensors except for the hub sensors). Is this just an algorithm that considers road speed and steering angle?

The stabiliTrac uses:
1. The EBTCM to break certain wheels (depending on the situation)
2. The coil around the steering shaft to adjust the stiffness (magnasteer)
(and on the CVRSS cars)
3) The CVRSS module to adjust the strut stiffness (depending on the situation).

Thanks :) That's really interesting, so I guess my car has everything except RainSense and Bose (and RSS). And even with all the driving I did in the snow I didn't even know I had it!

i just cant resist heading in there and trying to spin out and have fun but no way just wont let me do it
i have only heard a few ppl have successfully done a spin out with the sys engage and they where trying for it and never able to do it again lol

I tried to spin it on snow and the only way to do it is using the parking brake. I got partial side slides but I had to fight with the T/C and Stability.
Well is not hard to get it into a understeer situation though (specially if wet)...so be carefully with that, it is nose heavy!

Yes, the stability control system takes some of the fun out of winter driving. After a couple attempts I no longer try to get the the rear end to kick out as it seems senseless. We recently had a few inches of exceptionally slick snow. Many on the road were spinning out and forced to find less hilly routes. I took a very hilly, turn and stop filled route--"Traction Engaged" and "Stability Engaged" messages galore as I drove completely normally. Only split seconds of control loss and the systems reacted faster than me.

Both impressed and a bit bored, I took an abrupt 90-degree downgrade turn at much faster than "safe" speed for the conditions. All four wheels completely lost traction with an uncontrolled skid ended by me--not the computers--as it definitely lasted more than 2 seconds with no message from the DIC. It's an amazing system that seems to work especially well on low, wide cars with front-wheel drive, but there are limits...
