for years I put regular valvoline 10-30 oil and then I have put the half synthetic valvoline 10-30 What valvoline oil do you recommend. I heard you need zinc based oil or additive on these older engines. Should I spike the gas with lead substitue no ethanol.

I've been using Valvoline 20-50 racing oil in my '68, 472, for decades without problems.

Folks;
Milt- I always use the old stand-bys...10-30 Valvoline, Quaker State, Castrol or Pennzoil. There's always one of these brands on sale at the parts store. cheap
On my Cadillac 472 and 368's I change the oil and filter twice yearly...Autumn and Spring. RA has super low priced filters too Last week I got a box full of filters from RA @ $1.10 each del'd to my front door! easy
Cadillac engines love fresh oil. Clean bearings are happy bearings!

Regarding synthetics, back in 2019 I did 2 expensive consecutive synthetic oil and filter changes on my twin 368's. Then began very noticeable different engine characteristics with the synthetics...ticking, gasket weeping and minor leaks. A waste of $$$$. After going back to the old Faithfulls, like Pennzoil 10-30 and Fram filters, my engines are back to normal, purring along with tankfulls of ESSO Extra.

Regarding oil additives..I don't use em. My 44 and 55 year old stead's odometers have 100k, 120K and 164K miles with quiet motors. Mind you I did try some Sea Foam in my Q-Jet this Summer when I was doing some carb/timing tweaking. Didn't notice any difference?
