Guys sorry to be the bearer of bad news...........but, with about 650 miles, at certain "steady state" speeds I heard the faint beginnings of a gear whine.

And yes, I broke it in, and no I still haven't even launched the car, only some spirited upshifts.

It will be interesting to see if it gets worse in the next 1 1/2 to 2 months before it is gone.

Just to play devils advocate:

You sure its the rear end. My water pump whine (or harmonic balancer whine) both PIs sound alot like rear end noise when I know they are not... VERY similar charateristics... Have you had either of those PIs dealt with?

Reed,

Pretty sure, I've read about the WP and this is not throttle related, but was only at certain times while in a coast mode, let off the gas and it went away, gave it gas and it went away.

It did sound like it was from the rear of the car as well, I'll really listen as today was the first time I heard it and it was after about an hours driving time.

So far the clunk is still under control.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:crying2: Dammitt!!!!!!!!!!! Not what we wanted to hear. I was getting all prepared to go in to the dealer and make my case to get them to order a new one since they couldn't fix the old one. Dammit. And a few other choice words out there.

Never heard a water pump that sounded like a bad/ whining diff. A whineing diff, is unmistakeable.

Damn, I hope the noise is something else other than the diff. Some of us were probably going to intentionally try and grenade our diffs (not before spring '06) so we could get the new part number. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I had my car in the dealer for the past 5 days for a rear clunk and the "whine/hoot/howl". My tech joined me for a ride and could swear that it was from the rear...I think its from the front. Only happens in 5th or 6th gear, 2500-3000rpm, when the temps are over 195degs. Sounds like the pump to me, right...well, the tech hooked up the "electronic ears" and still couldn't find the origin.
They fixed the clunk, it was a bad left rear knuckle but didn't fix the hoot. They're on the phone with Caddy to determine the best way to proceed...I'm not very happy at the way they're proceeding, but its all documented....we'll see.

I have a very slight gear whine on my '05 too - first noticed it around 700 miles. Dealer can't give me crap about improper break in as the car had 400 miles on it when I got it and I had a 50 mile freeway drive home from the dealer. I've been pretty darn mellow with the car so far. I now have 1100 miles and will be replacing the diff fluid and the oil this week. It will be interesting to see how much metal is in there....

I swapped it today. I'd like to at least buy myself 3-6 months before it fails so the upgraded '06 diff is installed as the replacement. I almost forgot the additive, I'm so used to using Redline. I had the job done and the car back on the ground when it hit me. So back up in the air, removed some fluid, poured out ~4oz, added the bottle of additive stuff and pumped the mixture back it. Nailed it perfectly too for how much I removed.

Whine is gone. For now....

There was very little metal on the drain plug, but that fluid sure was black and thick....

Swapped the oil too as long as I was messing around.

1100mi
