You are right that it has reverse threads.... I've never had to change the water pump before though. Are you sure the socket is going in all the way? It doesn't have to turn much at all, maybe you've got it to the point where it should come straight out already... I'm not sure what you can do, other than keep trying... :hmm:

Well Anyways, :welcome:

Good Luck!
Hopefully someone else will chime in.

The tool from Autozone will only fit on one way. I believe the small "tooth" on the tool fits at about the 10:00 position. When I changed my pump, I tried a breaker bar and pure strength with no success. Everyone here will probably tell you NOT to do this but I used an impact wrench to dislodge the pump from the housing and this worked great!

If you'll put the tool on the pump with your hand and jiggle it back and forth while turning it with your hand it should come to a point where it stops moving and is still level. After you've found that point, attach your ratchet OR impact wrench and begin the dislodging process.

Use an impact wrench - it should come right out. A buddy of mine had a '95 Aurora and had the same thing happen - I used an impact wrench and it came right out.

The Snap-On tool is a much heavier duty version and probably wouldn't slip but it's 3 times the price of the Lisle tool...

An impact should take it out, make sure the impact is set to tighten.
It hooks in a backwards direction.
When you put it in, put a little dab of oil on the o-ring and the face of the pump and just turn it so the o-ring crushes, don't kill the thing or the next guy will have it harder.

There were 3 versions of the tool, the first version sucked at grabbing the tabs on the pump.
