I noticed yesterday while washing my wagon that the top uppermost point of the tail lights has some flexibility to it. There is about a 1/4" gap between the inner housing of the tailight and the body of the car. If I push it down it will sit flush with the cars metal but once I let go it pops up again. Is this normal? I've attached a factory pic with the part in question circled.

One of my taillights did this. It's due to the little plastic hook clip at the top breaking. This is where the taillight connects to the opening in the roof rail.

My local dealer replaced mine under warranty.

Good luck.

I'm bringing this up from the dead!

Really glad I stumbled upon this post. My drivers side tail light was peeling off with a rather large gap. I don't mind it, but I was worried that water was going to get into the housing. I brought it over to the dealer and they're going to have a new one installed.

My passenger side is starting to peel off, and when that does happen within warranty I will ask them to replace it as well.

Both left and right on mine have a widening gap of about 5/32". It kind of snuck up on me, then I saw this post. So they should be flush, right?

Yep, both flush. Watch out where they just put black double sided sticky tape to fill that 5/32 gap and they don't actually replace the lights. Don't accept that.

Very bad design
It's not the design, it's the execution.

Remember, they outsource to other suppliers who make these taillights. Low bid wins, and then GM squeezes even more concessions out of them whereby the Tier 1 suppliers have a hard time making a dollar.

When mass producing cars and a defect goes downstream, sometimes deviations are temporarily established. Wether its parts or the body thats out of spec, it takes at minimum 2 days (sometimes weeks depending on supplier) between detection and new product to arrive. Seeing as this was probably deemed a "C-Surface" (IE fewer than 25% customers would notcie this) with no impact on vehicle function, they probably issued a deviation until new product arrived, but provide support if customers notice. Mass production is a business, not an art.

This photo suggests that its your roof rail out of spec, not the taillamp (flush to rear body panel). Don't know if they are adjustable...

My wagon is a 2013 both my tail lights at the top have a gap. Both my upper clips are broke, I’m blaming that on the hot climate where I live. I have priced out new tail lights through Cadillac and they are $1,000. apiece.
