So now that I have had the Volant CAI for a while, what am I supposed to do with it as far as maintenance/service is concerned and how often?...(And Robert, if you know, just give up the info without telling me I should have gone the TOnyA route):)

Use the K&N cleaner kit. They are easy to find. How often depends on your type of driving..like dusty roads etc and how many miles you drive. The Volant looks easy to open. I'd just look. Then since you have it open go ahead and clean it. That filter will last forever.:yup:

I've opened it up a few times and it looks o.k. Just wasn't sure what needed to be done if the filter was not looking good. Thanks!

On my other cars and trucks, I would clean the filter ever 12K - 15K. Any autoparts store should carry the K & N filter cleaner kit.
I also used a K&N cleaning kit I already had. Be sure to follow the directions and don't over-oil the filter. Too much oil will foul the MAFS and the replacement will likely not be covered under warranty.
It will be easy to tell. If it's dirty, you'll see it. If the filter color looks weak and light, it's also time to clean and re-oil. My AirHog looked very good after 30K miles, and only showed a little dirt under where the waffle grid holes were drilled. It could have gone another 30K. My Volant has a blue filter, not that color matters, but the K&N cleaner/oil kit is available everywhere (it's red, though). There are usually very specific instructions not to over-oil. Basically, you apply oil to both sides on the pleat edges and let it soak into the center, until you get a nice even color.
You also want to make sure it doesn't dry out or else you lose the effectiveness of the oils to collect fine particals.

Hmmm..how long might that take?
Seems as if the vote is in on K&N...anyone know about this Volant kit...Is it basically the same as what K&N offers? I just found this link on the web http://www.autoanything.com/products/product_sp.aspx?p_id=2344&se=
if you have volant, stick with the volant. likewise for the k&N...

THE ONLY REASON ODY & I SUGGESTED THE k&n CLEANING KIT IS IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME BUT IS MUCH EASIER TO FIND IN STORES.
I dunno, I'm one of those odd types that tinkers. In high dusty type enviroments I would do it every 5-10k. I did mine every 5, and at 15 K I replaced the filter. But I didn't use a K&N. I use a special dual stage filter, which is corse on the outside and fine on the inside.
I think the only difference between the K&N and Volant kits is the color of the oil: blue for Volant and red for K&N. When you clean the filter, you'll notice that it is white - not blue.
Yup, the filters are nearly identical cotton gauze. They're white to start with, but they use different color oils. My experience is when you clean them they don't go back to white, but the K&N goes pink from the residual oil. No big deal, except that the Volant filter will likely be light blue and turn purple with the red K&N oil. The color really doesn't matter since it's the oil itself that makes the dust stick to the cotton gauze. In a dusty environment, I agree that 10-15K mile cleaning interval is required. One shouldn't have to ever replace the filter, though.

I live in a relatively low-dust area. My filters all looked good even after 30K miles. I clean and re-oil them just for piece of mind. Incidentally, here's a pic of a Fram AirHog from my previous TonyA modified airbox after 30K miles. It's dirty, but has plenty of clean area left for flow. One can see that the additional holes in the waffle grid make a big difference in filter area.

PJ, the K&N intake uses an open top airbox, while the Volant is closed. The big deal is noise attenuation, and the Volant is quieter, and won't allow hot underhood air into the filter, negating any "cold air" effects.

Thanks for the info guys. Y'all were right....again!!! (see why I love this forum???).....Anyway, went into Pep Boys and they had tons of K&N stuff (Robert, I even saw the Air Hog too)....the K&N air cleaner/recharger kit only cost me $9.99. I bought the K&N, and now I have a red filter..before it was blue - Volant, but of course the color doesn't matter, especially since the Volant box is closed so you can't even see my red "bootleg" Volant filter...lol. I don't think I over oiled and it sure was dirty at 32K miles.....I'm kinda diggin' this DIY stuff....
The AirHog has a red filter. I wonder if K&N makes them or if Fram just uses their oil?
