STS = Vin 9
SLS = Vin Y

Yes, and this applies to all FWD Northstar Cadillacs. VIN 9 is the 295/300 hp (depending on year) engine, coded L37, and always comes with the 3.71 transaxle. VIN Y is the 270/275 hp engine, coded LD8, and always comes with the 3.11 transaxle.

The only exceptions to this are the VERY new FWD Northstars that are rated slightly differently due to the new SAE Certified guidelines, and the Pontiac Bonneville GXP, which had the 275 hp engine (and I assume Y in the VIN), but it DID have the 3.71 transaxle.
