I need some help.... A little over a week ago I had 4 new Pirelli Rosso 245/45/18 installed. I bought them off ebay. The tires were brand new with stickers and nubs all around. I had my dealer install them and do a 4-wheel alignment.

I noticed immediately after this vibration that I hadn’t noticed prior. I dropped my car back off to the dealer yesterday. They get back to me today stating the wheels are balanced properly and the front two tires are “out of round”.

I’ve never heard this and hoping someone can tell me if they are blowing smoke. I’m planning to contact Pirelli tomorrow about the tire warranty but I noticed reading their warranty coverage online that warranty starts from date of original retail purchase and I didn’t purchase through a retailer.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well yes, you can have a tire out of round. Sound like your dealer did a road force wheel balance. and if they did they should be able to get most of it aways. But lets say they did and its still bad. You can always rotate the tires to the rear and maybe feel it alil less. Or get 2 new tires/ As far as the warranty goes i have no idea. But i think if you did not buy it then you maybe out of luck. Anyway your dealer is correct and they could be out of round. Check and see if they did a road force wheel balance.

You might just have a tire or tires w/ high road force variation. There is also a TSB for replacing the front lower control arms.

They didn't do a road force balance and they are doing that now. I checked the TSB and it appears to only apply to 2004's with FE3 and I have a 2005 with FG2's.... Am I looking at the wrong one?

You're looking at the right one... That bulletin only applies to 04's with FE3... That doesn't apply to your car...

well let us know how it turns out, many time the road force will work. Even if they say it is out of spec have them do the force balnce and fit the tire to rim the best they car, most of the time it helps and you will never know. Let us know how it turns out

The odds are good that your problem involves the tires because the vibration was incipient after their installation, but it's always possible that the vibration is being caused by something else. I also have a vibration that is most noticeable between 65 and 75 while in sixth gear. The dealer originally diagnosed this as a bad drive shaft, but that didn't solve the problem. Engineering fingered the transmission and said that it has failed in this manner on several V's. My dealer now has a transmission on backorder for me.

So make sure your dealer keeps an open mind when searching for the root cause.

Here’s the latest, my dealer did a “road force” balance and was able to better balance two of the tires. However the original tagged “out of round” tires they couldn’t correct. According to them the tires should be rated some where in the teens, ideally around 15. The two “out of round” tires were 47 and 36 so they moved them to the rear and the vibration is more subtle now.

Additionally, the person I purchased the tires from on Ebay is refunding half my money so I can purchase two new tires. It seems to be working out….

who's the eBay vendor? That's pretty reasonable of them (though I guess it's cheaper than paying shipping for returns).

Out-of-round tires are common. Twenty years ago the only tire manufacturer that did not make out-of-round tires was Michelin. The other manufacturers have improved but still produce some bad tires. You cannot correct an out-of-round problem with any kind of balancing. The only thing you can do to the tire itself is to "shave" the tire to help eliminate some of the out-of-roundness. Most people don't like to do this as it cuts away some of the tread, in effect shortening the tread life of the tire. If the tires are out-of-round and you don't want to shave them, your only option is to replace the tire.

As a matter of interest, vibration can also result from defective tires that do not have uniform elasticity around the circumference of the tire. This is another fairly common problem that is less likely to be seen in Michelin tires. There is no way to correct this problem short of replacing the tire.

And, before you ask - no, I do not work for or have in stock in Michelin.
