Interested to see how this turns out, also interested in seeing how the computer and speed sensors react to the change.
Me to! I found a place online that will do a speedo adjustment. Will be long project. Today I'm cleaning and painting...

Nothing wrong with current carrior. Just putting in lower gears. Sensor and speedo will be interesting. Stay tuned....

You'll love the difference, first gear in my coupe is like rocket! Second gear is really close as I have to shift into third at around 90 km/hour.
Shakey no race car. Just lowing gears a little. Makes it jump off the line a little harder. Also the 3.73 has a limited slip for better traction.

What is wrong with yours, aside from the higher gearing?
I guess my post was lost on the OP, so I will try to be more clear.
Perhaps the point of this forum is lost on you. It's the Performance Mods forum. Installing lower gears has been done for performance for about as long as people have been modding cars. Admittedly, 3.42 to 3.73 is a pretty small change, but as far as I know that's the only other ratio available, so he's gotta go with what he can get.

Are you trying to create a race car out of a [C]adillac by installing parts from the junk yard?
 How does installing a factory part make it a race car?

No, it's not lost on me. But the OP (and me) own a 4K lb. sled that ain't never gonna go but so fast. So actually more than being lost on me, it's funny to me.

As for myself, I have made peace with it. I know it will never be a rocket ship.

The bigger issue here is that if you have a perfectly good rear end, why would you buy something from a junk yard that is questionable? I know this is the "performance" forum, so if he could shave a couple of seconds off his 0-60 time by installing the junk part, it might make sense. But for the small gain that it makes, seems silly. But hey, that's just me.

its not a small gain? Have you ever changed rear ends out before? It makes a world of difference.

Went from 3.23 to 3.42 to 3.73 in my old Firebird, the 3.42 to 3.73 change was definitely noticeable and switching from an open rear to limited slip is only going to increase the fun factor. Congrats and have fun!

I've done a lot of gear changes in my days as a hot rodder. You'll definitely notice a difference around town. Might actually see an improvement in mpg.
But gear changes are always a compromise. You'll obviously be turning more revs down the highway. That translates to more fuel consumption and more engine wear.
This my be an acceptable compromise for you.
Keep us posted.

I finally installed the gears today! Went from 3.42 to 3.73. No issues with computer or ABS. Car feels quicker. It was worth it. I got the complete carrior from online wrenching yard. It took me about 4 hours. Getting the exhaust out of the way might be the hardest if you try this. I have a flowmaster bolt on exhaust so I just unbolted to get it out of the way. Next I removed 2 X 6 Allen bolts holding the rear axles to the carrior. No need to take the rear wheels or axles out. Then I removed three bolts holding the drive shaft to the pinion flange on the carrior. Then there are three big bolts holding the carrior in place, remove and lowered the carrior with a flour jack. Install was the reverse.
