Update CUE software

Hello. I have a 2016 ATS4, and the CUE system is no longer showing Apple Car Play. I want to update the software to see if that will resolve it, and don't really want to take it into the dealership. The OnStar is inactive, so I can't do OTA updates that way. I've searched around online and found a bunch of posts indicating that you can do it yourself a couple of different ways, such as connecting the car to an in-range WiFi network, or downloading an App for Windows called 'Cadillac CUE Connect' and then pairing a computer to the car using the Bluetooth on a phone as a bridge. I haven't as of yet been able to get either to work. For the first option, I can't find any option in the CUE menu to connect to an available WiFi network, and for the Windows app, the site I found it on had a link to the app, but it was dead. Can anybody help me with getting this update done? Or is it even possible to do it yourself? Thanks.

The one surefire way to do the update is to get a programming cable (such as the OBDx Pro GT), buy a subscription from ACDelcoTDS for your VIN and program the module with a laptop (must be able to handle the installation of the SPS2 software suite and have the ability to handle the programming).

It will update any/all modules in the car to the latest configuration for your VIN.

If you have a modern laptop (I3/i5/i7 gen 7 or newer with 8gb ram) and wifi near your vehicle it should cost around $200 total for the hardware/subscription to handle it.

If not, then your BEST optionis to take it to a dealership and pay the money to have them do the updates.

So, there is no way for a 2016 CTS to update CUE software unless I take it to the dealer and pay? Lame. Even my old 2014 Lincoln could be updated by the owner by downloading the package onto a USB stick from the Lincoln website. The process was horrid, but quite possible.

It would be unusual for a software feature to disappear due to a software issue without other major problems appearing. Does your 2016 support Carplay via wifi/bluetooth or does it require a cable? If so, the cable is the most suspect followed by the port. Try a different cable first if your Carplay requires a USB connection, if it supports wireless Carplay then doublecheck that wifi and bluetooth are enabled on your iPhone.

I rarely support going to the dealer with an out of warranty car but if you want to update the software, this is a case where the dealer is best. It is very possible to "brick" the car during an update and that can be expensive and difficult to resolve since now your car will need to be on a flatbed to the dealer.

IF you decide to get the software subscription and do it yourself, put the car on a good battery maintainer and make sure it is in the proper service mode (NOT accessory mode) via the ignition button so that it won't shut off mid update. Also make sure that the laptop has a fully charged battery and a good interface cable properly installed. Any glitch during the wrong part of the update is going to create a major issue. Even when dealers follow the instructions, cars have had issues during an update.
