Why I see a red light on my Ultium PowerUP Level 2 Charger ? It started recently and has been coming up many times this week.

To reset it, I am switching off the main power button on the electrical panel and switching it on.

Is it normal? Or do I have a bigger problem?

The GM Ultium EV Charging Station User Manual has two red light on the charger conditions in the "trouble shooting" section.

One is resettable - The red light flashes. If this continues after three reset "cycles", contact the Concierge.

The other is a "hazardous error" and the red light is solid. Power down at the breaker, unplug the car, contact the Concierge.

I am working through this now. The charger was installed in March or April, 2024. Six-ish weeks ago at about 4am, an EXTREMELY LOUD beeping sound started up in the garage. I was smart enough to grab my phone and get video. I called the Concierge later that morning, they conferenced in a technician from the charger manufacturer who said to return the charger. I called QMerit (their contractor installed the charger). I called the Dealer to be sure they would accept the return. I want a full refund of the charger.

So far, the Concierge has not agreed to a full charger refund after they receive the charger; QMerit electrician site visit for the de-installation is expected to be ~$250, the Concierge is "willing to pay $100 and said that would have been covered under an Extended service contract" had I purchased that when I bought the charger which no one mentioned until now (and the Concierge is either unable or unwilling to provide a link or contact associated with the "extended service contract"; the Dealer Parts Manager is expecting me to pay a $160 restocking fee. I can't get an RMA to ship the charger to GM - that's why the Dealer Parts Manager is involved - they get the RMA. This has been escalated at the dealer and I am trying to time the charger return with a now-scheduled appointment associated with front left and right wheel well line replacement (warranty item - they won't stay seated properly). There were a couple of other hiccups during this drama.

I've said elsewhere, I really want to love the Lyriq, but this experience along with the vehicle software/module/hardware issues, GM/Cadillac is making that a very difficult thing to do. In the meantime, I'm using the charger (as Level 1) that came with the car... As it is, I was just starting to trust the car because it has been stable, but this charger episode exposing a very ugly side of what appears to be a fairly broken company.

In the 10 months I have had my charger, the hazardous solid red light has been on twice. Both times, I turned off the breaker, disconnected the car, switched the breaker on, and the error light disappeared. When the car's charge dropped below 100 miles I plugged it back in and the Charger worked. It has been working for at least two months since the last error.

The flashing light, resettable error, troubleshooting says turning off the power to the charger is a step to take, but after three instances, there is likely a problem.

The solid light, hazardous error, troubleshooting has no 3x power cycle instruction and I power cycled like you. The first two happened during daylight (awake) hours. The last error at 4am was #3.

There's a three year warranty on the charger. Hope yours continues working.

Hard to say, based on your skills. I have a ChargePoint and watched electrician install it. The ChargePoint Video Guides on their website are very good, YouTube has more excellent ones also. The install paperwork included is also good. I would never try to install a charger on my own. But now that it’s installed, if I had to change it out I think I would try doing it if it made sense after studying those places.

Reviving the thread

Came home today to that red light on my PowerUp + Charger. When connecting, it gave no power. I disconnected, flipped the breaker off and on, and the unit came back. It is working, but it looked like the lighting was back up to a high level. Looked at my MyCadillac App, and there is no longer any home charger section. Checked the app store. There is a new app.

Of course, pairing data was gone, so I hunted that up. The pairing code is located "conveniently" on the back of the charger, which is attached to the not so transparent brick wall near the garage. I did keep a record... Now it's paired with the new app, and I could again reset the lighting level.

I paid a LOT to QMERIT and GM for this combo - they had to install a power management box inline as I have 200 amp service. I HOPE that I don't see the light again soon.

The App, iOS is total crap, and has 2 correct one star reviews. All it does is allow you to change lighting or input data about amperage to reduce the available charge rate. COMPLETELY DUMB. It allows you to connect to WiFi, but there is NO ADDITIONAL FUNCTION, and if I put the app on an iPad on the same net, it wants me to pair Bluetooth. USELESS. I have a ChargePoint at the other house, and the app has many functions. The GM app doesn't track charge levels, power used, anything. The one star rating is well-deserved.

If the red light on the charger is solid, it may be a “hazardous” fault. Check the charger manual. Contact the Cadillac concierge. They may connect you with a “charger specialist” or a technician to diagnose.

Assuming they agree it is a “hazardous” failure, demand a refund and use those proceeds to get a ChargePoint or Emporia.

I ended up going this route and refused to pay the deinstall charge (did it myself) and installed an Emporia (again, did it myself) that has been great. This was my first time working with 240v residential power…

Good for you!

I powered down at the breaker (the charger was hardwired) and it faulted a couple of weeks later. I’m glad you’re having better success, but the third time mine failed (within 6 months of installation), I could no longer trust it and didn’t want to find out what would happen “if a GM product caused another GM product failure (charger and Lyriq).

… And I finally read the manual only to find that the solid red light failure is “hazardous”.

That GM appears to have replaced that manufacturer is very telling (along with the myriad of complaints off the Ultium chargers on this board and elsewhere).

That GM would not take care of the de-install charge as the failed charger was only 6 months into its 3 year warranty was a huge irritant… and the reason I decided to do the de-install and Emporia install myself.

I took the failed charger to the dealer and they initially said I would be charge a restocking fee. Hint: Work with the Parts Manager which resulted in that policy being waived. The full credit appeared a couple of weeks later, the Emporia was installed and it’s been great.

GM pushed hard for a replacement. I told them I couldn’t trust the product and could not, in good conscience, expose my house to a potential “hazardous” charger since GM could/would not explain why the failure was considered “hazardous”.

But like I said, I’m glad yours appears to now be working out.

I have a 2025 Lyriq. purchased the GM Ultium Level 2 EV Charger from the dealer 3 months in and started getting fault lite. Call Concierge hot line and they were said cycle the breaker and wait 2 minutes it cleared. next day same thing. Reset again lowered charge rate from 32 amp to 24 to lessen load. Failed again. temp gun on all contacts while under load all temps were 10 deg above ambient. called 800 # from previous post made claim and got a claim #. Was told the escalated my complaint. Called dealer and requested refund. nothing. Waiting and using the charger from trunk.

FWIW, I purchased a 2024 Sport 3 in May 2024 along with a Level 2 Ultium Charger. Charger was installed (hard wired) by professional installer (through GM). All was well for 6 months and then got the dreaded solid red fault on charger. CB resets would work for a few charges, but the fault always reappeared. Worked through my local Cadillac Dealer and they replaced the charger (I had to pay for uninstall/reinstall). Now, 6 months after second charger installed, I'm back to solid red fault. This is perhaps the biggest weakness of my Lyriq ownership! I'm headed back to dealer right now to discuss a long term solution (hopefully). Wish me luck.
