The button cluster on the left side of my dash in my 95 STS contains a trip button and it has to be repeatedly pressed very hard to get it to reset to 000.0,.could it be that the contact underneath the button is dirty ( I had this happen on a pwr window button on my Explorer once ). Has anyone ever taken the buttons off and if so how ,..a tool of some type or gentle prying? Thanks.

I think to get to the actual contact, you have to take the instrument cluster out and take it apart. I would not recomend prying. It is actually not that hardto get the cluster out. a few pops and clicks and screws and its out. After that, it's like 6 to 8 small screws and the whole thing comes apart. Just be sure you know how to put it back together.

Press and hold

It may be a simple matter. Try pressing and holding down the button for 4-5 seconds. Its not an instant reset...if that makes sense.

If the cluster has to come out. The complete top of the dash must be removed.

Logan,..thanks for the reply,..I was aware of the press and hold feature to clear the trip meter,..but sometimes it will reset easily and other times it takes 10 or more attempts. Thats what made me think the contact is dirty. I need to find a service/repair manual for my STS. Thanks again for the reply.

If you are having trouble finding a service manual, try to find an O'Reilly Auto Parts store. They can order you one. This is the only place I have found one locally. If you don't have one in your area try finding one online. Good luck.
