Transmission Stuck in Reverse

The dealership is telling me it's not the linkage so they want to replace the whole trans ($4,200+) :bigroll: Guess I'll tow it home and pull it myself. Any recommendations on rebuilders?

The car is actually in Chicago. I few to Las Vegas for the CES show and then back to O'hare. I got about 5 miles from the airport and heard a clunk and experienced what felt like a loss of power. Pushed in clutch, went to neutral and rolled off to the side of the highway. When I let out the clutch (in neutral) the car started going backwards. When I put it in first it felt like it was in 2 gears (1 & R) at the same time. No problems as long as the clutch was depressed. Called OnStar and got a tow.

I tried moving the shifter and could get into all forward gears but not reverse (couldn't physically get the shifter into that gate.) Before the wrecker came something must have moved and everything started working okay. I could pull forward and back and shift into all gears. I even drove it up onto the flatbed to have it towed.

Had it towed to the dealership. Drove it around the dealer lot and up and down the road with no apparent problems. Decided to try and get home but as soon as I started down a road where I could shift into a higher gear (5th to be exact) another clunk and now in reverse for good. Towed back to dealership :(

Oh, Ron, btw ... we moved ... no forwarding address.
Don't worry, I can still hunt you down :)

Here are a couple of pic's from inside the trans. One shows the reverse gear that attempted to weld itself to the shaft. The other, which is a little dark, is all the shavings stuck to the magnets on the bottom of the trans.

Was the fluid level up to snuff? What kind of fluid?

These questions may have nothing at all to do with the bearing failure ... just thought I'd ask.

To the best of my knowledge the level was correct. It was Mobil 1. The only thing I can think of is that it was near 0* F that morning and the car had been sitting at the airport for a week prior to my driving it that day. I did let the motor warm up before taking off but the trans was still cold. Shouldn't have been a problem but may have been a contributor.

Thanks,
I really need to learn how to do that
Fml, my 2004 CTS-V just did this same exact thing! Neutral is now reverse and 1st and all other gears feel like two gears fighting (reverse and forward) 2526268100 with any help please!!

Sounds like mine. This seems to be a common issue unique to the design of the tail section use only on our cars in the T56. The reverse synchro and gear section gets oil starved and the synchro welds itself together. In my case I was driving in sub zero temps after having my car sit at the airport for a week in the cold. The tail probably didn't see any oil before the synchro seized.

I ended up doing a level v upgrade from rpm transmission in Anderson IN.
Please call me if you have any more knowledge on this matter. 2526268100. Is it rebuildable? Will I only have to change out my reverse syncro? Cars in the shop now and don't wanna be dicked over. Please call so I don't miss the post. Thank you for anyones help!!

This would be my guess. Decently big job just getting to it, though ... remove tranny, crack it open, do the syncro swap, reinstall the tranny.
That's crazy! Glad you got a bada$$ trans from RPM though! :) If mine ever gives up the ghost that's what I'll be doing.

I'll give you a call if I don't see a reply to this post but I'll document the answer here for future reference:

Short answer: Yes, it is definitely rebuildable.

I oversimplified when I said it was just the synchro. If you look at the pictures what you'll find is that the synchro came apart but the bigger problem is that the reverse gear welds itself to the shaft it is riding on. This is why the car feels like it's trying to go in reverse and forward at the same time... it is. The reverse gear never disengages from the power transmission path through the gearbox.

When the guys at RPM pulled mine apart it looked like all of the damage was at the back end and I'm guessing it could be repaired without completely disassembling the rest of the transmission however, once you've got the cost of pulling the trans out of the car and opening the back it's not that much more work to pull the rest of the guts out and make sure nothing else is wrong in there. Note that there was a lot of debris in mine from reverse doing it's damage. I would have been concerned about this having done damage to the other gears.
