i found on craigslist a 400 turbo transmission from a 1985 brougham. its got 80k miles and a torque converter. my car is a 1990 brougham with the 200r transmission. would the 400 i found fit? ive heard of people doing this converstion with nop problems. the 200r isnt making bad noises or funny smells yet and shifts smooth, but knowing i have an econemy car transmission in a 5000 pound car just makes me nervous.

any other benifits if i were to change the trans?

The 85 came with the same trans as yours UNLESS it was a limo with the 6.0 liter 368. Then, it got the TH400. Your 200 has OD, and the 400 doesn't. Bye bye to your mileage with the 400...

Bottom line? Don't fix what isn't broken. You call the 200 an econo car trans, but (respectfully), the 307 doesn't have enough power to break it. Ask the turbo Grand National guys if the 200 is an econo car trans :D

If you want the beefier trans, go with a 700r4. That is what came in the trailer towing packing ones with the 350 like mine. However, they are a truck trans so it shifts a little harder.

The 700 won't bolt to the 307. Wrong bolt pattern. Also, to call it a "truck trans" is a stretch. It was used in every RWD Chevrolet application, including Caprice, Camaro, and even Corvette! I have the 700 in my Roadmaster wagon, and it does not shift hard at all.

It was used in almost all light and medium duty GM trucks though. My Mom's 00 Blazer has one and the GM trucks made at the same time as my car all had them because they had the same engine.

just from knowing now that my gas mileage will get worse, that makes me very ok with the 200. haha.
I can understand your temptation, I have a Turbo 400 in my Coupe de Ville and it's a bulletproof transmission....

How bad is your gas mileage? My car can do somewhere in the area of 350 miles with an eighth of a tank left and as far as I know we have the same drivetrain and weight. Do you do a lotta city driving?

half a tank will get me around town for about a week depending how much i drive. i do a lot of backroads driving and some city driving. jayoldschool makes a good point, its not broken yet so i dont think im gonna fix it. but i have heard some ugly tales about the 200r in these cars.

I think that all depends on how well they're cared for. Just make sure you keep up on maintainence and don't try to do burnouts, or like floor it from red lights or anything like that and you should be fine. I've had mine for 5 years with the original trans and never beat on it......

i baby my car, the only time the pedal ever hits the floor is when im passing people on the highway. another wise member of this fourm told me a while ago on cardomain that it should last if im gentle with it, and i am. not like i need to do burnouts to get peoples attention with this car anyway.

Now if you get a TH350 tranny with overdrive... That might make it worth it. I personally think that the 200s are garbage(but my opinion comes after a $1500 donation to the tranny shop). My friends 87 has no reverse either. I think if you have a chance to get a better tranny, do it. If it works, you can sell your 200 as a working unit. If the new tranny doesnt work for you, put the 200 back in. But even though you dont do much highway driving, you should still get overdrive.

You can add the overdrive module, but you will need a new driveshaft. Same thing they used to do in the 60's and 70's. Pull a lever and Bam, overdrive.

ok so just this week or so its started to shift kinda heavy.... not a loud clunk or anything but it just doesnt shift as smooth as it used to. dad says this is the u-joints starting to get loose and they should be replaced. is this gonna be bad on the tranny at all? hopefully that doesnt sound too stupid. i know my way around an engine but transmissions are as much of a mystery to me as the minds of my ex-girlfriends.
