Each year when I start my 98 Eldo after sitting for 4 months in storage, I noticed I cant shift it out of park until the car warms up slightly...
Would you know what's actually happening that prevents this?

I'm asking because this year, the car took much longer to shift it out of park.
It was basically up to full temperature before I could do it.
If I drive it on a regular basis, I don't experience this.

Just curious if this is normal or heading for a problem.

Thanks,
Jim

My suspect would be the shift lock solinoid is sticking. It's in the consol, in front of the shifter .

Are you physically unable to move the gear selector or do you mean you move the selector into gear with no response from the transmission?

Set the parking brake prior to putting it in park. Then shut it off.

Given the nature of the parking brake cables and levers on these cars my guess is that leaving it with the brake set will cause the cable from the pedal to the splitter to freeze in the sleeve, thus creating more problems.

This series of cars really needs the parking brake to be exercised several times a month. Too many threads on stuck parking brakes.

Google "cadillac forums seville deville eldorado stuck parking brake".

Sub, thanks for the information but my issue isn't with the parking brake.
I do just that...set the brake when driving the car occasionally over the summer to keep it functional.
Any thoughts on the shift lock solenoid question?

My reply was to the member who recommended leaving the car in storage with the parking brake set ..........

Not familiar with the console, stick, or shift lock on a 1998 Eldorado.

OK, in that case I agree with Harry. I'd suspect the shift interlock solenoid or maybe it is not getting a signal from the brake switch. You ARE holding your foot on the brake when trying to shift out of park, right?

Yes... If I push it any harder, it will go through the floor. ;)
The more I think about this, I think you both may be right.
I'm saying this because I've taken the shifter apart in the past without running the car and was able to shift out of park by just turning on the ignition, and pressing the brake. I'll do some checking and replace it if it's suspect.
Thanks!

If you don't want the lockout feature, you can simply pop off the link on the shifter mechanism that goes to the solenoid.

I found the solenoid as shown in the picture and popped off the white cap at the end of the arm with a flat blade screwdriver.
Started the car cold and was able to put it in gear right away.. Good to go now!
Thanks guys... :)
