I am looking into buying a 95 SLS that the owner says does not shift out of second. That's all the ad says and I have not been able to talk to him yet. Ebay ad. Not sure if going from 1st to 2nd or just stuck in 2nd. Any thoughts? Any service bulletins or the like? Any help is greatly appreciated. -------silentmike

Its gonna need a new tranny....... You may get lucky and it could be just a clogged filter (unlikely at this point), but chances are its gonna need replaced anyway........

I think what the ad means is it shifts from 1st->2nd, but wont go from 2nd--> on.........

You more than likely DO NOT need a new transmission!!

First try cleaning the wiring connections to the transmission. Usually shift problems are due to shift solenoids though. Try pulling up the codes
There are 2 solenoids, an A and a B. Seems reasonable to change both while you are changing one or the other.
The solenoids come in a solenoid kit that contains both solenoids and new bracket for around $50.00. The tranny shop I use only charges $75.00 for installation. One dealer I know wants around $270.00 to install. The price is too high. It only takes about an hour to change. You drop the bottom pan which drains the transmission fluid and there they are, change them, clean the screens, put the bottom pan back on and refill with tranny fluid. Simple!

Depending on your level of expertise....Here's how to check the electrics on the trans.

1
Install the J 39775 Jumper Harness to the transmission side of the 20-way connector.
Using the J 39200 Digital Multimeter (DMM) and the J 35616-A Connector Test Adapter Kit, measure the resistance between terminals A and E (1-2 shift solenoid valve).
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
19-31 ohms
Go to Step 3
Go to Step 2

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the 1-2 shift solenoid valve.
Measure the resistance of the 1-2 shift solenoid valve.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
19-31 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Measure the resistance between terminals B and E (2-3 shift solenoid valve).

Is the resistance within the values indicated?
19-31 ohms
Go to Step 5
Go to Step 4

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the 2-3 shift solenoid valve.
Measure the resistance of the 2-3 shift solenoid valve.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
19-31 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Measure the resistance between terminals T and U (TCC PWM solenoid valve).

Is the resistance within the values indicated?
10-15 ohms
Go to Step 7
Go to Step 6

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the TCC PWM solenoid valve.
Measure the resistance of the TCC PWM solenoid valve.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
10-15 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Measure the resistance between terminals S and V (A/T ISS).

Is the resistance within the values indicated?
1300-1950 ohms
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 8

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the Automatic Transmission Input Speed Sensor.
Measure the resistance of the Automatic Transmission Input Speed Sensor.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
1300-1950 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Measure the resistance between terminals L and M (TFT Sensor).

Is the resistance within the values indicated?
158-4020 ohms
Go to Step 11
Go to Step 10

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor.
Measure the resistance of the Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
158-4020 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Measure the resistance between terminals C and D (PC Sol. Valve).

Is the resistance within the values indicated?
3-8 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 12

Disconnect the internal transmission harness from the Pressure Control solenoid valve.
Measure the resistance of the Pressure Control solenoid valve.
Is the resistance within the values indicated?
3-8 ohms
Go to Step 13
Go to Step 14

Replace the Automatic Transmission Wiring Harness. Refer to Automatic Transmission Wiring Harness Replacement.

Is the replacement complete?
