My 08 CTS is approaching 50k miles and I am looking at transmission service. I know GM recommends fluid change at 50k severe service but I have no experience with GM cars so I was thinking about changing it now at 50k even though I would not consider my driving to be severe. Question I have for experienced Cadillac owners:
1. Should I do it now?
2. Should it be just drain and fill or full flash?
3. Do you do it on your own or take it to the dealer? (I never use fast lube places as a rule!)

Thanks for your input.

Changing the transmission fluid at 50k miles is called for only for "heavy service" conditions. "Heavy service" is specifically defined by GM as driving under one or more of these conditions: (1) In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90°F (32°C) or higher; (2) In hilly or mountainous terrain; (3) When doing frequent trailer towing; or (4) Uses such as high performance operation. You say you don't consider your driving to be "severe," so if it does not meed one or more of these "heavy service" conditions, the manual calls for a change at 100k miles, not 50k.

Forget what GM tells you in this case. Change it. Change it now, or don't ever change it at all. And never, ever, NEVER flush. It pulls all the crap up into the gears. A dealer (a good one anyway) will never flush a transmission. They will drain and replace. The trans flush was invented by trans shops looking for more transmission replacement business.

Guys

thank you for the input. I will change the fluid. Given to "hick up" we had with the OLM and OCI recommended by GM I will play safe and change it soon.

Jimmy
by flash I meant drain through the cooler lines while motor is running. This ensures torque converter fluid is replaced as well.

I WOULD NEVER EVER ALLOW QUICK LUBE PLACE TO FORCE FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION! I have heard too many horror stories.

I could do it myself but I will take this business to my dealer as he has been very helpful fixing so many reliability problems. They deserve this business.

Changing the ATF in the CTS trans is not a easy diy project. It has what they call a sealed trans with no dip stick so getting to the fluid requires some extra work. The car has to be on the lift just to check the fluid. I read in the service manual there is a special GM tool to completely flush the cooler lines etc but if the dealer does not have one, so they just did a drop the pan, R&R the filter and add atf.

I had my 09 CTS4 done last summer at 10,000 miles as for years every new vehicle I get I have synthetic ATF installed at about 10,000 miles. Been doing that since 1979 and never had a single trans issue ever.

I had the dealer do my CTS4, the local trans shop did not want to do it because of the complexity of the drain and fill procedure. I supplied my own ATF, AMSOIL low viscosity (dexron VI) ATF and they installed it without any hassle.

thank you for the info. It only confirms my decision to go to the dealer. I will check the Amsoil transmission fluid too.

Since I just reached 50K, I wanted my tranny fluid changed. I instructed the dealer to drain and fill.

The dealer told me since it was a sealed system, it would actually be cheaper to flush rather than drain and fill. I told them to go ahead and flush. Hopefully all is well.

So they took the easy way - no filter change, no pan cleaning.

The ATF and filter arrived at my home so when I get back I will do the change the "old fashion way" - drop the pan, change the filter, refill. This is what the service manual is suggesting.

Can you confirm there is a filter to replace? The dealer told me there was only a screen on the CTS.

I ordered a filter. Apparently it arrived at home. I cannot check it now as I am out of the country but be back tomorrow and will post update.

Just got home and checked the package. It is definitely a filter assembly as per service manual. If your dealer is stating otherwise he is pulling a fast one...

Z71,
this is exactly what I ordered. One can clearly see the filter at the bottom of the assembly.
