Tranny/Clutch Issue HELP!

Hi everybody, new forum member and proud new owner of a black/tan 05 CTS-V with 17K miles. Question for all of you. Bought the car about 2 weeks ago, noticed that when in 3rd,4th,5th or 6th and push the clutch in to downshift into 2nd or first, when I move the shifter into 2nd or 1st (with the clutch all the way in) I hear the transmission wind up as if it hasn't stopped. A couple of times it has ground on me. So I took the car into the Cadillac dealer and much to my surprise, GM told them to replace my transmission with a brand new one as they had some problems with a countershaft bearing. Well 4 days later, I get in the car today, pull away from the dealer and same issue! When I took it to them the first time I mentioned that maybe the clutch fluid was an issue (after searching here) but was told all fluid levels both clutch and tranny were fine. To me it seems like either the clutch isn't fully disengaging (but why only 2nd or 1st) or the synchros are bad (but 2 trannys in a row). Going to go back to the dealer but wondering if this is a normal quirk or if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks to all!

Tranny and Clutch, sounds like a great title for a 70's porn flick.

.....oh, and here they are :) (you can decide which is tranny and which is clutch)

To check if clutch is properly disengaging: Does the transmission easily go into gear from neutral? If not, does it go into gear easily when the motor is not running? If it goes in easily when not running and not easy when motor is running, then you have clutch problems. Could be air in the clutch line.
Make sure you have clutch fluid in the reservoir under the hood, drivers side in front of brake master cylinder.
if this is when you are downshifting from a fast speed to a lower (high rev) gear, then I'm pretty sure this is normal. This is the synchros winding up... This is why people heal/ toe when racing because it removes this as the engine is at the same speed that the transmission "wants" it to be at..

Try a heal/toe shift (or rev the engine when doing this shift) and I bet it will be much easier...

Yeah sounds like what you are hearing is the syncros spinning up the engine side of the transmission to catch up with the output shaft.

"granny shiftn' and not double clutchin like you should"
Thanks for the replies! It shifts fine both with the engine on and off, just get the winding up noise and a couple of times it has ground the gears. I have had a couple of LS1/MM6 cars and never had this issue but wasn't sure if it was inherent in the LS6/M12. Yeah I am probably too easy on the car as I still have the "new car don't want to rip the rear end out just yet" syndrome :)
Guys,

Checked the clutch fluid and it was at the min line, so I topped it off. Tried both heel/toe shift and just reving higher during shift and neither one made a difference. It seems to go into gear easier with car off and a little easier from neutral to 2nd, but whine still there when engine is running. If it was the clutch not fully disengaging (ie air in line) are there other symptoms that would show? Does anyone else notice this in their own car?
Newest update, went back to the dealer and drove an 07 CTS-V they had on the lot, and it did the same exact thing, so I guess it is just me and I am not used to the new sounds/quirks of a new car. Thanks for all the great input.

After reading Reed's responce and re reading your original post, it sounds like you're trying to downshift to a much lower gear than you should be. Going from 6 to 2 or 1 is certainly not ideal in daily driving situations. Trying moving into gears that are better matched to the speed your traveling or wait until you are going much slower for 1 or 2 gear.

Do you really double clutch? Does it save on wear and tear? I only do that in cars where the syncros are shot.

It's not that I am actually downshifting from 6th to 2nd, even 3rd to 2nd under normal driving conditions the tranny winds up. I am just not used to hearing it with the clutch all the way in. In every other manual car i have owned i have never heard something like this with the clutch all the way in. Thanks for all the info.
