TPMS Replacement Cost

Three of four TPMS (2016 aftermarket) sensors failed on me in over the past 4 weeks. Got real cold, assume hat had something to etc.

I was quoted $100 each parts/labor to replace from the biggest name tire retailer in my area.

I don't drive magnesium rims with P345/30 22" tires - I drive 235/55s snow tires on 17" $75 steel wheels.

I asked for a discount if I had them do all four and was awarded 25% off to replace all 4 sensors

Keeping in mind I did not need/was not buying new tires or rims, and that they did this in less than 90 minutes while I waited. $350 (incl tax) for TPMS replacement hit me as 1) outrageously and obscenely expensive and then 2) absolutely reasonable once I calculated part cost, equipment, expertise, reprogramming, speed at which performed etc.

Other's experiences and opinions: Would a dealer have charged me $650 for same service, as I would expect?

I purchased my own sensors from RockAuto for around $35/each and had my tire shop install them when I had my tires replaced at no additional charge.
Just replaced a flaky sensor in my Caddy and again purchased my own sensor. IIRC they only charged me for mount and balance, around $15 out the door.

For the price you paid, I personally would've lived with the orange triangle glowing on the dash.

I thought the price was good. I had some replaced throughout the years by a GM dealer. Started at about $100. Last quote was $250 each. Take vehicle to a Goodyear and paid $100. Had another fail about a week later and paid $60 (part), due to replacement of tire. So, $350 seems good to me.

Hey thanks all for the feedback.

So looks like I spent $120 extra and got it done right away, while I waited. Instead of the Rock Auto route and dropped off at local garage ($20 per tire). Happy to spend the extra in this case, I saved hundreds over the years doing a lot of other work myself etc.

I buy lots of parts from RA - but TPMS I don't understand - ? Programmed, Clone Capable, Aftermarket Programmed, Premium, $22, $35, $47 each? And my local tire mech said he can't program all types of TPMS? Uh. what? Screw it.

Good intel through - thanks again!

I was getting new tires at Costco. I have a 2010 Escalade ESV and figured I better replace the sensors in case the batteries were getting old. Costco wanted about $40 each sensor. I purchased genuine AC Delco TPMS sensors for $17 each. Costco put them on but said I had to go to dealer to get them reprogrammed. I think they were being lazy. I didn’t even want to deal with scheduling an appointment at a dealer and wasting my time to get the sensors reprogrammed…let alone paying whatever ridiculous price they will charge me. I purchased the TPMS relearn tool off Amazon for $23. I received it the same day and re-programmed the sensors in about 10 minutes. The tool instructions suck. But you put the car ignition on. It works when running also. Hold the remote fobs lock and unlock buttons until the horn beeps. Go to the left front tire, hold the tool near the sidewalk of the tire near the valve, press the button on the tool. The horn will beep indicating it learned that sensor. Move to the left right and hold near the valve until the horn beeps. If you wait too long you may have to press the bottom on the tool. Repeat for right rear and then left rear. Horn will beep twice when the last sensor is programmed. Done!!!

welcome to the forums! Plenty of instruction on this site (esp. in Tech Tips) on doing relearn on TPMS, FOBs etc. Keep in mind that the TPMS are not programmable but your car is. In other words, you teach the car to recognize those sensors, not the other way around.
