So, it has been almost 90 degrees here in the Pacific NW. Unheard of for this time of year. Anyway, this is the first hot spell since I have owned this car. The A/C gets cold for a bit, then warms up, and repeats the cycle but without any rhyme or reason. I assume the R-134a needs a boost, but have no codes or low refrigerant message. Is it possible to need refrigerant in a Cadillac and not have the message or code displayed yet? Assuming it needs a boost, is the stuff from the auto parts store good enough? And assuming it needs a boost, it must have a leak, correct? So, I was considering the R-134a with stop leak from the parts store. Opinions? I have some gauges somewhere in the garage, unless they got thrown out in our recent move...haven't been able to find them, yet.

:tisk: No stop leak in the A/C system. Any refrigerant from a parts store should work. I suspect moisture in the system is icing up the orifice tube. Then it warms up melts the ice and the cycle starts again. Might want to evacuate the system, pull a vacuum for a while and then recharge the system.

My opinion as well.

Just had to add a can to mine the other day. Never gave me a code on the dash but it needed one anyway. Been doing better but evacing the system might not be a bad idea anyway.

Yeah, I'm going to call the A/C shop this morning and see how much coin they are talking...that will determine if I just add a can of R-134a to see if that fixes it or not.

Sounds like it wouldn't hurt to try adding a can in the mean time to see if you can get it to do at least a little something. I don't know what it's like around there, but here the humidity is a killer most days in the summer. I thought my car was going to run me out the other day before I got mine to straighten out.

r134 is designed to work better under load (ie at idle it doesnt have near the cooling ability old r12 had)
that said you COULD just need a charge up as the system is several years old, id sink a 7 dollar can in before paying major bucks for a system check but thats just me...

also that being said my Camaro is 11 years old and has 110K and the ac is still ice cold even with a noisy compressor...
