Re: timing set issues

Mace Engineering in Australia makes a good set. Available with or without sprockets. Make sure you order the correct set depending on whether yours are the 'revised' design or not. Their support folks are very helpful.

It was 2-3 weeks before they arrived, but that gives you a chance to gather the other components. I ended up getting new sprockets from Cadillac which lowers the overall cost a bit. Make sure you order the cam locking tools from Mace or Caddy, they are pretty much a necessity for this system.

You may get lucky and find a Cloyes set at a parts store which is OEM. Nobody around me could confirm who made the one they would order so I didn't want to risk getting one of the cheap sets floating around... highly recommend avoiding anything of unconfirmed origin. Cheap chains stretch, fast.

I recently installed the Cloyes brand in my 07. Rock Auto has much better prices than any of the stores near me, but I don't think Cloyes makes the full chain set for the 05 year (with 1st design chain)? If i were doing an 05, i would try to find a full set with sprockets, just to make sure everything is new. Melling set is avaluable on rock auto, so I would consider this. I have no experience with Mace so I can't comment on how they compare. Also, I used Felpro front cover gasket kit, valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, and intake gaskets, all of which worked well. The only problem was the small inserts in the plenum gasket which were upside down...just pulled them out with pliers and flipped them over.

Also, I did not use the cam lock tools. You really don't need them as long as you are careful and you are not changing the actuators...see the youtube video by Cloyes for directions to change the chain. Their tech support is also excellent!
