Ok so im getting a new timing chain put on soon.2004 cts 3.6

Mechanic is going to charge me 800 for labor and im going to supply the parts. I believe its about 600 for parts.

I believe they dont sell by the kit anymore, so my question is what parts should i be looking for? And while at this job should i have them change/ fix anything else while in there.

They do sell a kit at Advance and Autozone. Its made by SA gear comes with all the chains, guides, and tensioners. If you order online I got mine for under $200 bucks

Ive heard its best to buy the parts straight from the dealer.have you had any problems with the car once installed?

I called Napa and they had a similar kit for $250.I believe i have to get the gaskets from the dealer.

Just had my timing chains replaced in my 3.6 about a month ago using the kit from Advance Auto #76159. I bought the kit and had the dealer install it and had no problems with it yet. As far as I can tell the company that makes this kit is the oem manufacturer so it's as good as buying the parts from GM. Plus about $400 cheaper then from the dealer and they weren't even going to change the guides!

While they were in there they replaced the oil pump and spark plugs as well. They also provided some seals and such.

There is a one year warranty on the parts from Advance, but since I bought the kit myself there was no warranty on labor. Now if I had let the dealer buy the parts then Advance would have warrantied the labor for 90 days. However they also would have marked it up a couple hundred dollars and it wasn't worth it to me for such a short warranty.

In total I paid the dealer about $1,200. $800 in labor, $345 in parts they provided, $230 for the parts I provided for a total cost of about $1,400.

Thanks for the info..well pretty much im going in the other direction.im putting a rebuilt engine in for $2500.has 61000 miles .

The work i was going to get done was going to be close to 1800-1900 hundred.

Be careful with used engines. Consider having the shop take off the front timing cover to see the condition of the components and also a look at the valves/rings on top. Make sure the oil hasn't been baked on everything from the last owner not changing the oil or running it with low oil. If the engine is out then doing this job should be fairly cheap because it won't have any accessories that need to be removed.

I'm less familiar with the in-depth engine work but I did just have the timing belt, water pump, sparks and serpentine belt all replaced this weekend on my 3.2L. Missed the thermostat but I may try swapping it this summer myself for some experience.

Anyway, all this costed $700 from a trusted mechanic who also happens to be a friend. The timing belt was like $45, yet for your timing chain on the 3.6 y'all are quoting $250+? What's the deal, just much more complex?
And I thought a major advantage of a chain was that they really don't need replaced, but if you're doing it anyway what's the advantage then? I got away with a $200+ cheaper part that does the same job.

Just curious, I like knowing all I can.

Well for my car for example.i need to change 3 chains, tensioners,etc along with 4 actuators ... that right there is about for parts : 800-$900 and labor, depending where u go 750-$1000..total 1600-$2000.
I believe you change the 1 chain.If your going to get it done, you might as well attack everything associated with timing chain.
