Timing Belt

First of all, NO I'm not having yet ANOTHER problem with this car. :)

But since there will be work done on it very soon, should I have the timing belt replaced while we're at it? I don't know if it’s original or not, but compared to the cost of repair if it fails, the cost of a new belt is significantly less.

Signs of wear would be the same as the serpentine belt?

My car WILL run like new when I'm finished. I'm confident I don't have a lemon here, just a car that's slightly temperamental like its owner. And I didn't say high maintenance, I said temperamental. :)

You dont have a timing belt, it's a timing chain which is supposed to be good for the life of the car.

Ditto. STS was not built by Honda or Toyota where you need to change belts at 60k or so.
Yeah, the timing chains are huge, you shouldn't have ANY problems with them.

:) I was gonna say, "this isn't a silly Lexus or Acura, this is a real car."
you still can
I'm assuming your '93 has a Northstar (??) - if so, the serp belt is a 20 minute change, and the only other external belt is the water pump belt on the other side of the engine. It's driven off one of the camshafts, so it only runs at half engine speed, thus its wear factor isn't as great, but its also the kind of thing you don't want to have go south on ya at 120mph...
i changes my serpentine belt on both eldo's i got them done at the same time for 25 bucks each.
Wow just the title of this thread had me shivering. Timing belt, ugghhh import crap.

Chains I say chains in America LOL. They're huge and vicious looking and ready to eat those 4 cylinder things :)

If the cars going to be apart it doesn't hurt to change the serpentine belt and the water pump belt.
Funny thing is that my l'il Scion xB has a timing chain in it's 1.5l 4-banger. Go figure. I looked at the maintenence manual when I first got it and I couldn't find a timing belt replacement schedule. Not that I'm complaining here...
