Timing Belt Recall kit...

2235 Views 13 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Warez
Hi Everyone,

I am moving to BC soon from Ontario... and my mileage is at 57000kms the recall kit was done at 12000km... So I've decided to get the recall kit replaced here because my dealership has provided amazing service.

My question is about the price on GM part # 55352001 (tensioner recall kit) I believe it has the belt tensioner and waterpump. They want $551.75 and are offering it to me for 440.00 + tax. Is there anywhere in there US I can order one from that is cheaper? I seem to recall US prices around $230.00

Thanks for the help!

I checked the GM database and there never was a recall regarding the timing belt for the 2000 or 2001 model years. I believe there was one for earlier years but I didn't check those so I cannot say for sure.

There was however a TSB that inlcuded the belt, pulleys and waterpump but interestingly not the actual tensioner.

Is the TSB what you're actually referring to?

Anyways you can purchase the timing belt kit (belt, tensioner and pulleys) from www.rockauto.com for much cheaper.
I was always under the impression it was a recall. I am referring to the tensioner...

Does this mean that 2000 and 2001 model cateras do not need to worry about the tensioners going?

If so I will not worry about getting it changed until later on.
I went to the dealership today and 2001 cateras are affected but it was not a recall. It was called a campaign (02041a). And they just inspected and replaced as required. My car had the waterpump and seal replaced at 12000km.

So I am going to have the tensioner, pulleys and belt changed.

Do you think I should changed the waterpump since there is only 45000km on it? and do i need to replace the front engine cover gasket with a new one?

Thanks:bouncy:
the pump sounds like it's rather new, unless it's leaking leave it alone. There is no front seal required unless you mean the front crank seal? You can pick up the belt kit for about $200. as noted at Rock auto...I doubt the dealer will want to install the after market kit, for $440. in parts let them do it, you then have a parts warranty etc. and some recourse if your traveling....etc. ...just my .02. An independeant shop wont have the set up tools etc. this may not be the job to try and skimp on, it's one thing if you can do your own work as your labor is free...
Thanks for the info!

I found some parts on gmpartsdirect.com

the kit w/ pump is on sale for 92 bucks there... so im going to get it shipped to a friend in the states. It must be their original parts and my dealer doesn't mind if I bring them in, so hopefully everything works out.

I haven't ordered them yet, since my appt. is for July 10th. I'm gonna do some more reading on the issue.

Thanks again for the advice:thumbsup:

ps. i hope gmpartsdirect.com has good service...

so I ordered the recall kit from gmpartsdirect.com

I should get it in about 2 weeks but does anyone know if their parts are OEM? they must be but the site looks a bit sketchy...

any feed back would be great cus apparently the parts are non-returnable.

Thanks.

The proper name for it is TSB.

I have the whole 10 page printout from GM for 02041A. This campaign does not cover the tensioner.

The only parts to be replaced are the pulleys (4), timing belt and water pump.
It does NOT instruct replacement of the tensioner itself.

The problem is that that tensioners fail when they get old; so this TSB is useless to you if you are nearing the required service interval for the timing belt and you have never had this TSB performed on your car since the most important component will not be replaced.

What parts are included in this kit?

Did you actually mean timing belt service kit?

If you actually ordered the TSB kit for 02041A then you're wasting your money becuase you should replace the tensioner.
And $440 is a rip-off for somthing without the tensioner when you can get the entire timing belt service kit which includes the tensioner for $200 from
Rockauto.com
yeah what I meant was timing belt service kit.

I ordered the part number 55352001... It says the tensioner but I read that it is the service kit.

since this is a GM number and I ordered the parts from gmpartsdirect.com they would be the original parts right?
I think what you ordered is the accessory drive tensioner and not the timing belt tensioner.

GM does not sell the timing belt tensioner by itself. You can only get the timing belt tensioner in the service kit. I was able to confirm this when I went to the dealer and browsed the parts database myself.
