I am being told by my dealer that my just purchased used 2000 DeVille DHS is losing oil because of carbon build up on the rings due to lack of use by the previous owner. There are no leaks or any reduction in cylinder compression. All other systems check out fine. The delaer plans to use some type of GM recommended cleaner that is supposed to reduce the carbon and therefore decrease the oil blow-by. Has anyone heard of this situation or am I being led down the dumb-dumb path?

No, that is a factory recommended proceedure but if you are paying the bill, go to the top left of this page, click on Technical Archives and read up on oil consumption. Usually all that she needs is a good whoop'in.

Thanks for the info. That's what the dealer is saying. They claim that it needs to be "run to the max" to clean it out and get it back on track. If that's what you mean then we are in agreement.

Yeah, a few good WOT runs down the highway should clean it out just fine. When you do it the first time, you'll see a cloud of bacl coming out the back of the car which is just carbon. Do a few more WOT's until the cloud is gone, or so minimal that you can't see it. If you can, try cruising at around 25-30mph, and manually selecting 2nd gear. Run the car up to about 70mph and then just let off the gas. This will cause the engine to brake the car, and will aid in blowing out any excess carbon. In order not to have to do this often, I would highly recommend flooring it on the occasional on ramp, just to keep things clean. A little WOT is a good thing for the N*.

And it does WONDERS for the driver as well... Better than vitamins. Once a week or so, just drive it like you stole it. Floor the throttle, take it up to the redline and back off again. Do it a few times. Enjoy it. The engine will enjoy it as much as you do. Personally, I would go through some serious WOT runs before letting the dealer dump chemicals in it.

I take mine to the track every once in a while just so i can get a good quality legal WOT. But i still do it on the on ramp and when passing slow cars

My mom's '99 burns oil like a two-stroke, dad's '04 doesn't burn a drop. I blow it out when I get a chance. BTW, I'm 45 and mom will be 70 next week.
No point here other than this gets me 100 posts. :D
